Which PC software to recover my music from my ipod ?
Hi,
Whilst getting rather frustrated with having 4 copies of the same song displayed in itunes, i decided to delete the whole library and start again.
Imagine my suprise when i realised it had wiped all my mp3's off the pc (it took my wife ages to rip our cd's!). I don't think its wiped the photos - i need to check.
Ok, im a muppet. Im going to have to find the box to unclick that says "delete all songs from hard disk too" before i do it again!
Anyway, i have tried the trial version of copypod - and this looks pretty good. It will recover all my music from my ipod and import them into itunes.
However, before i shell out $20 for the software, i was wondering if anyone knows if there is anything better or cheaper to use instead ?
Thanks in advance
Ringo

Hi,
As long as the ipod is ok, and all the music is on it still,
you can copy the music files off the ipod back into itunes.
If this is what you need, I can write up a guide if you need it?

I use anapod manager myself. It comes free with copygear, which is an excellent recovery tool in my opinion.
Support is absolutely excellent and the licensing is superb - i.e. the universal edition lets you install the software onto as many PCs as you want as well as use multiple ipods (i.e. wife's, kid's, etc).
I've been using it for about 4 years now through 3 generations of ipods and it hasn't failed me once.

Hope that helps!

Re: Which PC software to recover my music from my ipod ?
I feel for you mate !! I'm also going through a similar process and decided to clear my library of 12000 tracks as it was a real mess, although I did not remove the songs from the computer. I'm 3 days in with Mediamonkey sorting out all the tags once and for all and getting all the music in a logical order.
I use the freeware application Podplayer to use my ipod on my work laptop (without the need for iTunes) but this also supports song extraction from the iPod.

SEE instructions to load up iPod here:
- Firstly when in a file browsing window, goto TOOLS in menu, select FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW tab > and check the circle named 'show hidden files and folders'
- Next load up your version of iTunes. (I recommend downloading iTunes 7 if you don't have it already, as it has some nice new features).
- Restart then plug in the ipod.
- Wait for iTunes to open and then cancel any of the prompts. Then close iTunes.
- Open 'my computer' select your ipod drive (it's Removable Disc F on mine).
- Open 'ipod control' > 'music' (these 4 letter files are your music files. Note that each folder does not relate to an individual album, it is a set of different tracks/albums).
- Copy these files into the folder that you store your ipod music files in... e.g. Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
- Open up iTunes, goto import folder in the FILE menu... import the whole of the iTunes music folder.
- iTunes will recognise the track names etc. etc.
If you have bought much music from apple, you will need to login your details to enable the tracks that you bought from them.
Best of luck & give me a shout if you have any problems.
Cheers,
Mik

Re: Which PC software to recover my music from my ipod ?
Thanks for all your help.....
I have just used ipodplayer to upload all my music.
I think it has mostly worked.
Phew.
I had one scary moment when itunes started automatically and tried to update my ipod - but fortunately managed to switch it off before it got any further than the artics!
Thanks again
Ringo
