First info of the new LG HD/BD multiplayer....
First info of the new LG HD/BD multiplayer....

To me it looks like the BD player they presented at last years CES. So I don´t think this is the final look.

I'd agree. It looks as if they've simply removed all the logos save for the whopping great BD logo on the top form last year's prototype model, and etched in 'Super Multi Blue Player' as a placeholder on the drive bay and remote. The spec seems incomplete too as it fails to mention Dolby TrueHD support, unless it doesn't support it, in which case it would not comply with HD DVDs standards and might be another potential reason as to why there is no HD DVD logo on there, but for now I’ll happily claim that as wild speculation on my part.

Did I read that right? No iHD feature or incomplete iHD feature ? What could be those iHD features not supported. So I pressume there'd be no BD-J as well.

That might tie in with something Amir was quizzed on at AVS regarding single chip based devices dealing with HDi/iHD as LG note they are using a single Broadcom chip solution.

You can see why some of us loved the Intel inside solution

As Amir rightly responded to this news from LG on AVS too, LG cannot ship a player that is restricted in ANY way like that regarding HDi because doing so would not meet the mandatory terms set out for HD DVD players and as a result they’d find they wouldn’t have the right to put an HD DVD log anywhere on the player or on the box or advertising. You’re just not allowed to make an HD DVD branded player that might only do very basic interactivity. He said he’ll find out more about the LG at CES.

This is from the product info in the OP web link -
"BD-Java interactive capability with compatible media (not included)"
I can't see any reference to limited iHD.

Read the LG quotes from the demo reported at the Engadget link above, AVI. It's mentioned there.

Yea I did. Guess we need clarification as I understand some functions of BD-J are optional until later this year but I thought full iHD is mandatroy for HD DVD. Wonder if anything got lost in translation as its strange that the BB product info specifically referes to BD-J ???
"11:37 - "Full interactive support?"
Not quite. "Because of limited hardware, most everything essential is supported, but not all IHD features."
"Does the PC drive also have that limitation?"
"The PC drive can handle all the IHD features."
Maybe they are using the term interactive HD as a generalisation across BD & HD DVD. That would make sense with the BB product info but I guess we will know soon enough.

Re: First info of the new LG HD/BD multiplayer....
im sure the specs call for limited ihd compatibility, so they get around the licence that way, or they dont get a licence, and tell everyone it will play them, nothing tosh can do about that

Don't know just find it strange that the spec goes out of it's way to confirm no support for "optional enhanced BD-J" functionality yet doesn't say anything about a lack of support for full iHD meaning it won't properly support US HD DVD titles.
Here's a view from Amir over on AVS...

Sounds like he is saying they have not finished their HD DVD implementation and only support the older DVD menus (used by some discs in Japan). If true, they will have hard time getting HD DVD logo and claim compliance as all the discs in US/EU use adavnced content. Maybe they plan to do a firmware upgrade later?
I am running off to CES. If I learn more and can disclose it, I will do that.

Re: First info of the new LG HD/BD multiplayer....
As Sony and Toshiba clearly stated they were unwilling to licence any dual format players a long time ago when both LG and Samsung offered to produce them I think this Best Buy ad is wishful thinking on the part of both BB and LG.
Does anyone have any info to confirm this device is anything more than a prototype demo at CES?
