Picture quality issues on tier 1 BD50 Blu-Ray film.

Is this typical with Blu-Ray? I'm starting to regret buying a Blu-Ray player and I havn't even received it yet.

I hope this is bad PS3 decoding rather than typical mpeg2 encoding on Blu-Ray.

Re: Picture quality issues on tier 1 BD50 Blu-Ray film.

It gets worse than this but many are better as well. It is a pretty mixed bag for BD however even now despite what some people say about great PQ it is not there yet. AQ is excellent however. I am still waiting for my PH but I must admit these shocked the hell out of me but it was a difficult film to do. Perhaps they should have used better tools as this is just where MPEG2 fails and they knew that from the beginning as the HD DVD 'codec shoot outs' used this film!!.

Nic why dont all studios just use VC-1 i believe it is approved for either format?

Politics. When you earn money from MPEG2 and MPEG4 patents why use VC 1 when you don't earn money? It is not about the best but the one that earns you more money.

Re: Picture quality issues on tier 1 BD50 Blu-Ray film.

For some reason i though the fee to use the codecs was paid regardless of whihc one you use, almost like a bluray usage fee

i understand what you are saying but you would think you would want to put the the best quality possible to promote the format regardless of if it cost a few pennies per disc in licence fees

Yeap - the vast majority of MPEG2 titles have some blocking in them somewhere. Doesn't exactly 'ruin' the experience but it does get my blood up.

But don't worry BadAss will be along in a minute to tell you why it doesn't matter

Blocking does matter, but with 16 BD's on the shelf I've never seen any blocking. Please show me a scene where blocking appears and I'll have a look for it.

After the bomb falls and (initially) fails to explode next time the camera pans into the Sky blocking is visible.

Nobody else, can reproduce the problem according to the AVSforum topic.

Either his TV or player has a hardware fault.

Re: Picture quality issues on tier 1 BD50 Blu-Ray film.

All compressed discs and broadcasts have blocking, whether SD or HD. It's probably best not to go looking for it, because once you find it, you won't be able to ignore it any more. This is why less compression is desirable.

Or use different sized blocks?

No one seems to have the film, which being Pearl Harbour is not totally surprising. It's not a display issue, a display can accentuate compression artefacts but not create them.

Its not like I've never seen blocking before I've just never seen it on BD. I'd like to prove to myself that blocking isn't there before I can reasure others. Maybe you have to pause the movie and look real close, I have Pearl Harbour so I'll take a look tonight.

One thing that did worry me when watching Pearl Harbour was the amount of zits on Kate Beckensales face.
