DVD HDMI grainy image
I have just bought a Panasonic DMR-EZ25EB and have connected it with a HDMI cable straight to my LG PC42IDA plasma, the image from DVD looks really grainy. Its a worse image than when I used my old yamada dvd recoder and SVHS lead. Also the cable tv loooks poor when through the Panasonic, only hooked up from cable box to DVD via scart though.
Any ideas I was really hoping to see better quality not less.

Re: DVD HDMI grainy image
I've never heard of video noise on an HDMI connection before - sparklies yes, but never noise, I didn't think that would be possible on a digital connection.
Does the noise appear over the player's on-screen menus, or just on the film playback? Are you sure it isn't just film grain from the film itself?

I have tried a number of DVD's all look the same, and yes I would say the menu's do look the same also.
I am living ont he edge here after convincing my wife we needed a new recorder and having to spend £50 on a HDMI cable. She is not happy at all not to see more quality.
Been through all the settign and tired everything I can thnk of, I am lost on what to try next.

Re: DVD HDMI grainy image
Whats the image look like over S-Video or Component? Does the DMR-EZ25EB have an RF out? you're not inadvertanly using that are you? What resolution have you got HDMI output set to, suggest 720p...
The other thing is, if you can, post a picture of the image as its very hard to diagnose a fault without seeing the problem!
John.

Re: DVD HDMI grainy image
I am an idiot :D
Been back in the settings and I had the HDMI "digital audio out" setting set to HDMI and optical instead of optical only.
Think that may have caused it?
I have a Sherwood AV and am using an optical out to that for mi 6.1 audio, but I think the way I had it set was to use the HDMI cable for sending audio out too.
I only wish I had a HDMI amp.
cheers for the help lads

How long is the cable ? If it's less than 2m take it back (claim it is faulty it may be) and spend £15 on a Molex cable. Unless there is a fault on the cable you will find no difference in PQ between a £15 and £250 cable at 2m.

Re: DVD HDMI grainy image
It was the cheapest HDMI cable they had in store when we bought the machine mate, I don't mind so much paying £50 for a quality cable, I do not think its the cable anyway but it does seem as though having the HDMI set to carry our the audio too, is what caused the problem.
Will have to wait until the wife gets home though to make sure, with my eyesight it all looks fine .LOL
Tried taking photo's of the screen but all shots look poor, only got a fuji s5000.

Thats a weird one, have never heard of the audio interfering with the video in this way, if turning the audio off fixed the problem sounds like something is faulty.
Still, sounds like you're happy now!
Cheers,
John.

Re: DVD HDMI grainy image
Happy'ish :D
I will work it out some how, just noticed the Panasonic has no coaxial aduio out only optical I only have one optical lead for the 360 and a coaxial one that worked from the old Yamada, oh well another lead to be bought.
I am going to unhook the HDMI now though and try the SVHS lead to see if that looks better than the HDMI.
I am newbie to all of this HD stuff and you wil have guessed lol.

Even £15 for a 2m cable is a ripoff. At that distance any £5 cable is entirely as good as a £250 cable.

The cable may be good but the connectors aren't. There are some poorly designed plugs fitted to all sorts of cables that are just asking for trouble.
Take it from someone that wasted 9 months with an apparent HDCP issue, a well designed cable is worth paying a little more than the POS that some cables are. Its great if it works, but if it doesn't, then a few extra quid is worth it.
BTW. Of that £15, more than £5 is postage. A decent Molex cable is about £10.
