I call on all you CRT lovers! Please help!
Hi all,
First of all thank you in advance to anyone who helps.
I have had a Bush ( ) 22" CRT for about 6 years now. I got some money for my 18th recently and decided it was time for an upgrade. Did a bit of research and decided the JVC LT26DX7 was for me.
That was when I realised LCDs certainly aren't for me..............not yet anyway. The image was certainly inferior to a CRT for me and the ghosting on screen was too difficult to get used to. Also the image seemed to stretch at the sides. And at £627 it's too pricey for something I don't really like.
So I'm going back to CRT and need a little advice from some of you helpful guys.
I'm thinking 28" and have found the DAEWOO DUB2850 and JVC AV28E50SK but am no expert. Any good? Which would you go for?
Also, the Samsung WS32Z429TQ. Is it as bad as people say? Having had a rubbish Bush CRT from Makro for 6 years would I notice the gripes that many people have with this TV if I bought it? I know it's 32" but the HDMI slot is very appealing.
I basically want something around the £400 mark that will fill the time until LCD gets better ( a lot better I hope).
Any advice or can someone recommend a decent 28".
Many thanks. x

The reason for this was probably because the set was receiving a 4:3 picture and it was being zoomed in some way to fill the wide screen. It's not a fault of LCDs. If you were watching a true 16:9 source from freeview or DVD there would be no stretching. The zoom facility can be disabled on most sets.

lucy18,
the thing with the tosh 32zp48p is it only measures 750mm across the width! so in theory you could get a 32" instead of a 28" as most 28" crt's are probably the same size if not bigger. i had a 28" jvc that was wider than the toshiba!!
also i 2nd a27 choice as i have one

Lucy,
Have had Sony KV-28HX15U for 3 months now and love it - it even automatically sizes the picture according to input - clever - and at around £200 new, off ebay, can't really lose.
Still love the CRTs.

Thanks lads.
So is this Samsung WS32Z429TQ with HDMI not worth a go? I've heard some stories but is it really that faulty? I think argos have one and their delivery returns are free so that's good.
Shall I give it a shot?

Re: I call on all you CRT lovers! Please help!
The JVC is very good, at least the old ones were though they arent slim like the toshiba picture frame TV. The new TV's all seem to be rebadged Turkeys, including the JVC you mentioned.
The Tosh 28Z47 is at Currys if its in stock, great telly.
The ZP48 is pricey if you can even get one.
Samsung slimfit, I dont like the 100hz as its badly done or the geometry.
Its hard to find a CRT tv now, try cheapelectricals.
Pixmania do a Samsung and Philips 28" flat square tube thats cheap, 50Hz.
If you cant find any brand tv's then the Daewoo is your other option, I dont rate the older Daewoos.

Re: I call on all you CRT lovers! Please help!
There is currently a serious issue affecting loads (if not all) Daewoo 2842/2850 owners when watching the built-in freeview - several channels inc ITV1 and Ch4 lose the signal momentarily causing the screen to go off then come back on a few seconds later. This can be happening every few minutes! Very annoying to say the least.
See Deawoo 2842 - Problem With Digital TV, help please :(

Re: I call on all you CRT lovers! Please help!
Lowflyer, Newton, Jeffod, Suggud, Mike 7, A27,
A big thank you.
The whole thing is a dilemna. I'm sat here looking at a JVC LT26DX7 and I hate the quality of the picture. It's almost as if everyone has been utterly seduced by the obvious size benifits of an LCD and have happily sacrificed or chosen to ignore the obvious loss or picture quality.
Someone on here summed it up perfectly when they said they were sick of paying ludicrous prices for equipment that hasn't even improved on the quality of the equipment it's trying to replace!!!
Surely perfecting HD ready Slimfit tvs was the way to go first? Quite frankly I find it offensive that there is only one "HD Ready" Slimfit CRT (the samsung one) on the market. It's like we're all being forced to buy an LCD or Plasma whether we like is or not. LCD may be good for HD but what about those of us who can't afford or have no intention of paying for Sky HD or HD DVD Players at the moment and simply want to watch SD displayed well? I will eventually invest in an LCD but I will not be forced into paying huge prices for fledgling equipment!
Anyway, rant over. I'm going for a 32" due to the size issues (tv wise I mean ) that Jeffod described so I'm gonna be all annoying to you all and ask for some 32" reccomendations??
How does this look from Pixmania? http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/3924...me-32-82c.html
P.S. Could someone explain Hz to me in relation to CRTs? I know Hurtz is a unit of frequency but does the higher the Hz mean the better the Television?
Thanks a million, again.

Re: I call on all you CRT lovers! Please help!
already done it lucy! toshiba 32zp series or panasonic 32pd50 are also said to be excellent tv sets.
theres a panasonic 32pd50 and a few tosh zp on ebay at the moment but be careful not to buy a lemon!
have no experience of daewoo products but i think im right in saying you get what you pay for, built in freeview is another thing to go wrong.
i bought a wharfedale freeview box for £30 and it is excellent value for money although i have just got sky+.
i am in full agreement with your views about the pressures of the lcd/plasma market.i toyed with the idea, and had it in my head that i wanted a plasma due to hd but to an average consumer such as myself i have still not seen the perfect screen to buy but to me the tv i have now is as near perfect as im going to get.yes to the many members of this forum who are very well clued up on av equipment my tv will have its flaws but as i said to me,an average joe, i dont have a problem with it. my friend recently bought a samsung 40" lcd (the black one ) and i can honestly it is absolutly shocking quality all round.
if i can figure out how to do it i will post a pic of the quality if that helps.

Re: I call on all you CRT lovers! Please help!
I saw the philips 32pw6720 do the same, switch itself off and on when watching freeview, so the Daewoo does the same.
The 100 hz sets are displaying the picture at twice the rate i.e. 100 times a second than normal 50hz. The power supply of all mains tv and electrical devices is 50hz since thats the UK mains standard. The tv's use the same frequency to display the picture so they are in synch or something like that.
The 100hz tv's have to digitally store the picture then double its normal frequency and output picture at 100hz, not to everyones liking but I have never had one to give a fair comment.
I saw a Sony 100hz that looked the same as the 50hz but it may be an exception.
You can get smear or a slight mismatch when the frame rate is doubled.

Re: I call on all you CRT lovers! Please help!
Hi there,
I had the same dilemma in Autumn 2006, realising I couldn’t live with LCD pic quality but having little choice in CRT options. I’d strongly recommend looking on Ebay, where there are still lots of very good 28” & 32” CRTs for sale: I managed to pick up a mint 100Hz Loewe at a fraction of the original price and it’s excellent.
Generally, I’d say that CRTs built just a few yrs ago, when well-known manufacturers were still committed to CRT (rather than making them under licence) are much better than the remaining new CRTs. Given that CRTs can last 10-15 yrs, buying an early-to-mid 2000s model should be fine.
Btw I’d definitely not recommend the Toshiba 28YT56B: tried two, both had poor picture geometry (bends at margins), poor colour purity (blotchy screens), and other reliability probs.
Cheers!
