Unhappy iPod Shuffle (2nd gen) not charging properly

Hello,

I got a 2nd-gen iPod Shuffle for X-mas. It's supposed to be fully charged in about 4 h, whereupon it's supposed to display a green light. Mine has now been charging for more than 10 hours, still no green 'fully charged' light, just the orange 'charging in progress' light.

I have update iTunes (7.0.2) and the shuffle software (1.0.2). I have tried all my USB ports, which are all powered - other devices work no problem on them, eg, my wife's Sony mp3 player! And the PC power options are set to 'always on'.

Having had loads of duff electrical goods lately I have already decided the solution to this problem - it doesn't work as it's supposed to, so I'll be taking it back and geting a refund!

If you have any suggestions then please let me know. However, this post isn't really a question, but a suggestion to all of you with this problem to do the same (I have been on the Apple forum, and there are lots of us). Only then will Apple get the message!

However, if you are experiencing this problem, please post a reply and let the world know... the more rubbish we put up with, the more rubbish they will produce!!!!

PS: my wife's Sonic Stage software (sony) has stopped working since I updated iTunes & installed my Shuffle, coincidence??

Re: iPod Shuffle (2nd gen) not charging properly

I had exactly the same problem. Wouldn't charge, wouldn't stay recognised by my computer to synch so took it back to the Apple shop after reading on the Apple website about a number of people with the same issue. Told the sales droid I would pay extra and have a Nano in exchange for the shuffle so he offerd me an "appointment" to get the shuffle checked. This got my back up so I exercised my consumer rights and demanded a full cash refund for the shuffle then went elsewhere and bought the Nano and so far it has been excellent.

Re: iPod Shuffle (2nd gen) not charging properly

Thanks for the reply CraigO. I've just got my replacement Shuffle, so far it's only been on charge for 1 h.... I really hope I'll be seeing the green light this time so I can finally enjoy my new player. Well done on demanding your £$ back, nice one! If this Shuffle doesn't work then like you I might try a Nano.

Will report back if the light goes green (or not!)....

YES!!! GREEN!!!... just thought I'd let you know that on my replacement Shuffle the fully charged green light indicator came on after 3h of charging. I can only therefore conclude that the first one was indeed defective.

Re: iPod Shuffle (2nd gen) not charging properly

aaaaaaarrrgh!!!! after my above jubilant message, I then proceeded to 'update my iPod' through iTunes, this changed the software from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2, and guess what? My light went orange, and has stayed orange! For my first shuffle I did this update right at the beginning, and is probably the reason why I never saw green.

Trouble is, when I do 'restore', it doesn't roll back the software version!! I can find now way of contacting Apple to let them know of this problem, I tried calling technical support but they were usless & couldn't understand what I was telling them (they were obviously based in India!).

Even though this is a software bug I will once again be returning my product, my wife's Sony Mp3 player works fine, think I'll get one of those as this has really ****** me off.

Re: iPod Shuffle (2nd gen) not charging properly

have you tried running it and seeing how long the battery lasts for? If it is indeed, fully charged and the led is just reporting it's status incorrectly I wouldn't bother sending it back. If there are enough people with the same issue (and although I haven't researched, it appears there might be) then I'm sure it'll get fixed in a firmware update.

twas the previous post that made me think it's a software rather than hardware error, i.e.e upgrading firmware.

Re: iPod Shuffle (2nd gen) not charging properly

Hitby, when I had a similar problem, I couldn't even load any music on to the device to see how long the battery would last. A shame because it looks a nice piece of kit and i had read of a couple of workarounds. That being said don't want to have to use workarounds posted by users on a forum merely to get a device to do what it's supposed to do but I am very happy with my nano.
