AM Signal Boost

I'd love not to have to tune into AM again, but a local station (in the West Mids) only transmit their football commentaries on AM. Can anyone suggest a way to either boost the signal, or another aerial type (other than the loop wire type supplied as standard with most tuners). Cheers.....

Re: AM Signal Boost

Hi Tommo, is it a portable radio you have? If it is, a simple tuned loop antenna can work wonders. Make an 'X' shape out of bits of wood - make it so it's about two feet across. Now around the outside of the 'legs', wind about ten turns of cheap insulated wire and tape or glue it all in place. Here's the awkward bit - you'll need a tuning capacitor of about 300pf variable. Connect this across the ends of the loop.
With the loop standing vertically, stand your radio inside it. Now slowly adjust the tuning cap. At one point, the station will increase greatly in strength. To get best results, rotate the whole thing around for strongest reception.
Bingo! I used to use one of these to get Laser Hot Hits here in Manchester. It brought it from hardly audible to perfectly listenable.
I'll see if I can post a link to make it clearer for you. If you know someone who is into amateur radio or shortwave listening, they'll be able to help.

Take a look here: http://www.mtmscientific.com/loop.html

By the way, if you are using a hifi tuner with a little loop type of antenna you can do exactly the same and shove the little loop inside the big one, it works just the same.
