Home Build - Speaker cables in the floor

Hi,

I need some on advice on my home cinema setup.

I am having oak flooring laid and and want to lay all the speaker wire under the floor, but i wanted some advice on how to bring the cable out of the floor for the rears and front speakers.

I have thought about puting in some terminals, or just having the bare wire coming out the floor.

any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Home Build - Speaker cables in the floor

Your personal choice really, hifi purists would say cables direct to the speakers for optimal performance and minimal loss/degradation.

BTW Timber flooring looks much better if skirting is removed and replaced ontop afterwards rather than fitting a beading/scotia trim to existing skirting to hide the gap.

Re: Home Build - Speaker cables in the floor

Thanks, i think i may just have the wire going straight to the speaker.

I am in the middle of completely re-doing the downstairs. Kitchen is finished, dining room wall papered and now I am on the fun part in the living room. The hifi set up.

All the skirting is off the walls so i get a good finish on the real oak floors. I have to chase out the walls for cables too.

I will post some pictures of the build.

Re: Home Build - Speaker cables in the floor

Hi Adamski 1234, I have just had a wood floor laid & new hardwood skirting. The missus did not want holes in the floor or skirting so I brought the cables up behind the skirting and out of the wall at the top of the skirting. They are mainly hidden by speakers or furniture so is no big problem. I could have been a bit neater though

Re: Home Build - Speaker cables in the floor

I had a similar situation where I ran all my speaker cables underneath a suspended floor. I used Neutrik Speakon sockets (example here) screwed into holes in the floor. Speakon connectors lock into their sockets, and were designed for PA use so are over-designed to cope with general abuse/soaking-in-beer etc. They are rated at 30Amps RMS() and come with four poles meaning you could bi-wire easily, so I thought that would pretty much eliminate any purist issues too!

Re: Home Build - Speaker cables in the floor

Update,

Here are some images of what has been done so far...

I decided on putting the cables under the floor and up out of the floor directly to the speakers.

I have all the cables to be put in the wall, i will add these tonight, plaster, and wallpaper..

I'll update soon.

Re: Home Build - Speaker cables in the floor

Update,

things have come on quite a bit.

Just have the floor to go down now and then I can get some of the kit back in

Re: Home Build - Speaker cables in the floor

Have done the same recently.

I ran the cable under the floor, chased them up the walls, then terminated the cables with these.
