Standby Problem
Hi, can anyone help ? Everytime I put my PC into standby it comes back on after 5 minutes and is driving me nuts as I have to get back out of bed to switch it off again . I have tried the usual avenues of looking for viruses etc but to no avail. I am running Windows XP SP2 on a DELL Dimension 4700.

Re: Standby Problem
do your system logs reveal what it is that is waking up (your box) ?
It sounds like it is something waking up on the box rather than something coming in and doing a wake on lan type thing.
If nothing else the timestamp gap in the logs should be a good guide
control panel -> Admin tools -> event viewer.

Re: Standby Problem
Hi Steve and thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if this helps but I looked in the event viewer and it appears that there was some kind of security issue at the time the PC switched back on. The times being between 01:39:54 and 01:56:41 on the 02/01/07. Does this help ?

Re: Standby Problem
I can't spot an 'every five minutes' thing in that log but..
the Policy Ch...
entry followed by
Priviledge..
and
Logon...
look worth looking at. Drill down by clicking on them.
by this I mean the Network Services ones not the 'Auggie' ones which I take it is your ID ?
besides the security log have a look at application and system logs.
Also what you running ? - task manager view enough to start with.

Re: Standby Problem
and...
let it hibernate and then after it wakes up make a note of the time - it will help to try and match the log events.

Re: Standby Problem
Hi Steve....yeah Auggie is my ID (  ). The PC comes on after 5 minutes not 'every' 5 minutes although yesterday it took 15 (ish) minutes and I'd thought I had fixed the problem  . Anyway here is the view you asked for ;

Re: Standby Problem
Well your software mix includes a lot of stuff I don't run...
let it hiberbate then wake then check all three event logs. then we can look for a match with your running tasks...odds are it is one of them (assuming your system is clean of course)....

Re: Standby Problem
Hi Steve, it won't hibernate. I changed the power setting to make it hibernate rather than stanbdby when I press the sleep button but it came straight back on again. What should I do now ? Is it something to do with Firefox still being connected as I get an error message saying can't load etc ?

Re: Standby Problem
Hi Christopher,
It maybe worth checking you network adapter settings also. Check that it's not set to allow the computer to come out of standby.
1) Right-click on My Computer and select Manage
2) Select Device Manager in the tree
3) Expand Network Adapters, find the appropriate one and double-click it.
4) Select the Power Management tab
Is the 2nd check box ticked ("Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby")? If so, uncheck it and see if that helps.
Regards,
pingu.

Go back to standby and check all logs for events at the critical time.

Re: Standby Problem
Hi Steve> I did what you said and the only logs which appear are the security logs at around 4p.m.. No other events were logged.
