getting LP's onto PC

Don't know if this is the correct place to ask but here goes.

Have quite a few LP's which I want to transfer to my PC (XP home) and then eventualy put them on my ipod.
I have all the software installed soundcards etc, but cannot remember how to do this.
Bearing in mind my turntable (which is hooked up to my hifi) is in the front room and my pc is in the next room. Distance approx 5-6 metres
Any help appreciated please
Thanks

Re: getting LP's onto PC

All setups are different, if the turntable has a magnetic cartridge you cannot connect it directly to your soundcard - the turntable will require a pre-amp. Some cheaper turntables have this built in to them to allow them to connect to more modern amps with no phono equalisation. If the hi-fi system has a line out facility on the rear of the amp, then you need (probably) dual RCA/phono plugs to a 3.5mm stereo plug lead of suitable length to connect to the line in on your sound card.

Enable the input to your soundcard within the volume control properties, check for level - then RTFM for your audio software

Thanks Paul. The hifi has a line out. I think I have all the relevant cables, just need to see if I have one long enough

Re: getting LP's onto PC

Hill 1, my wife has hundreds of LPs and shes finally decided to transfer them to MP3.

To save on the hassle we are opting for the following gadget:

http://www.firebox.com/index.html?di...t&src_id=audio

As LPs have to be encoded in real time we've decide to do 5 each weekend.

Re: getting LP's onto PC

Thanks Xusia Of Delos
I've managed to find a cable of suitable length which will reach from the room with the turntable/hifi, to the room with the computer.
Have already done one LP and converted to mp3, with very good results. It's going to take a while to do them all ( 5 Beatles 5 Shadows "no snide remarks" and 2 Stones)
When I finaly get my 30 Gb ipod I can load them all
