Can't wait for SED TV

At the moment i have a Plasma, and looking at all the TVs in shops Plasmas are the best, but the SED TVs seem great.

I cant wait to see one, i hope by this time next year to have a new TV and hope its a SED TV.

Re: Can't wait for SED TV

I was hoping to wait for one of these too. But it appears less and less likely as time goes on that we are going to see them in the UK and affordable before 2009.

I guess a good plasma is as good as we are going to get for now.

Hi,

Got some real BAD NEWS for all of us expecting SED TV's in 2007 - Toshiba has officially declared that SED TV's will NOT noiw be marketed as mainline consumer products and will be specialist high price products for Studios and the like only - there it is, after all the hype. all the promises, all the postponements, all the new deadlines, one after the other - w are now being told this.. So, SED is DEAD as far as us consumers are concerned - I think this is really digusting behaviour from Toshiba - if they had licensed the technology to everyone else like JVC did with VHS then they would have dominated the global market and still had plenty of income coming in -- there excuse was it cannot compete with LCD on price -- well theres a way roubd that - create market demand for a superior technology, licensse it so there is constant supply, choice and avialability, more demand created lower prices and everyone is happy but I guess they are too arrogant, short sighted and frankly too bloody thick to even realise that.. what a shame and shameful conduct by Toshiba..

Re: Can't wait for SED TV

Hi,

The last press release on the consumer side I can find is this one:

http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2006_03/pr0801.htm

and that talks about 2008 maybe.

I haven't seen the pro marketing, so do not know whats been said on that side. I could also see them concentrating on the pro market only – plasma was like that for ages.

Sounds like SED has definitely gone off the boil hype wise – the Tosh/Canon camp seem to be back-peddling quite a bit lately.

That's a shame - sounded interesting technology – especially the high contrast and low power features.

Apparently SED is being further delayed by a lawsuit against Canon filed by a small American company that claims to own some of the SED patents.

Unless the report has got this wrong this seems pretty categoric to me, SED won't be a consumer product. Interesting that the Director says Plasma is the way to go.

Is anyone else working on SED for consumers?

Re: Can't wait for SED TV

SED was never going to be able to compete - there was just too much money invested in LCD. Eventually (if nothing else) the LCD industry would have killed SED with predatory pricing.

As it is the LCD guys are so busy bombing prices as they fight each other that there's no point in even launching SED.

A pity..SED looked as though it had potential, but the whole FED/SED business has guzzled billions of investors' money with no result..Candescent, Nano-proprietary, iFire, Sony etc etc

Sony is working on FED and wants to commercialize it, but if it will be available as consumer product remains to be seen: Sony Forms FED Display Venture Final decision is said to be made in June 2008.

Re: Can't wait for SED TV

I was hoping SED would own all the other screen types, but with all its delays I think its already too late to introduce another screen type.

Most people are happy with LCDs. I myself recently bought an LCD projector to replace my older plasma. Im very happy with it. (i know its not an actual LCD screen but its still LCD tech)

Even if SED comes out and it looks far better (unlikely) than either plasma or LCD, i doubt the prices will be competitive enough for people to move to SED.

This is the thing about SED. Is it really going to be THAT much better than LCD or plasma?
I dont think it will. And being new tech the prices wont justify it.

People wont buy into it in big enough number to make that tech successfull.

Even if, technologicaly speaking, SED is better than anything else, that doesnt mean people will buy it. VHS over Betamax is a good example.

If SED wasn't going to be significantly better than LCD/plasma then there'd be no point in pumping millions into the R&D, would there. Of course it will be better. Both for HD and SD material (especially SD).
