Region code 0 and color

Hi,
I Have a Problem with my Sony dvp-ns36 dvd player.
All DVDs with region code 0 are only displayed in black an white. all except one are in PAL so this is not the point. Code 2 does play well.
When i hit the eject buttun during play i see a colored picture just before getting to the blue sony screen.
Is there a general compatibility problem with region 0 DVDs on region 2 players?

Re: Region code 0 and color

Have you got a PAL only TV? The black and white is a classic symptom of playing NTSC on PAL only TV's. (R0 can easily be either PAL or NTSC).

Sony players output the same signal as it is on the disc.

Re: Region code 0 and color

It is a Pal only TV, but the region 0 DVDs that are explicitly labled as PAL are displayed in b/w also. So it cannot be an NTSC problem.
Since all DVDs with region code 2 are in color, i'd think that this might be the problem, but i do not understand why, since region 0 should be suitable for all regions...
How do DVD players handle DVDs that have a different region code anyway?

Re: Region code 0 and color

It shouldn't matter if it is region 0. If the disc is PAL then PAL is sent to the TV (same with NTSC).

What connection do you use? Is the TV too old to use a RGB scart connection?

Re: Region code 0 and color

I connect the TV over a VCR cause it is indeed to old and can can only be connected via the antenna cable. The conection of the player to the VCR works with scart and coaxial chinch cable as well. The player has three video output settings 'Video' 'S-Video' and 'RGB'. I tried all three.
But when some DVDs are diplayed correctly in color, this cant be a general connection issue.
What I'm most surprised at is the fact that when hitting the eject button for a short time i can see the correctly colored picture of the video bofore i see the standard blue screen of the player...

Re: Region code 0 and color

Think you found your problem then, you need a new TV and need to use RGB Scart, this will give you colour for NTSC format DVD's.

Re: Region code 0 and color

For NTSC this would be right, but the DVDs are not NTSC, they are PAL. So some PAL discs are in color(region 2) some PAL discs not(region 0).
Best i'd try the DVD player with another TV, if i find one ;-)

Are you 100% certain they are PAL though because I have several Region 0 DVD's and afew are PAL and afew are NTSC.

Re: Region code 0 and color

Putting the DVD's through the VCR can also affect the signal. It really needs direct connection to the TV.

This is certainly a PAL / NTSC thing.

Re: Region code 0 and color

most sonys will default to NTSC outup if the disc is anything other than region 2, they also often only outout ntsc for everything if modded to MR.

No they don't. They go by the format of the disc. If it is R4 then it is PAL. R2 can be either PAL or NTSC (Japan). R5 is PAL. R3 is usually NTSC.
