Wired and Wirless network sharing problem

Hi Guys,

Ive just bought a laptop and a router yesterday. Ive set up the router so that my pc and laptop can use the internet, with the pc using an ethernet cable and the Laptop using a wireless network card.

The internet is working fine but what I would like to do is also set up a way of sharing data between the pc and the laptop. Ive got an external hard drive connected to my PC and I would like to be able to use it while on the laptop.

Would i need to change my current set up that looks something like this:

Modem - Router - PC and laptop

to

Modem - PC - Router - Laptop

I dont always want the pc to have to be turned on to use the net so id rather my current style of connection was used (im aware if it was off i couldnt use the external hard drive)

How would i go about setting this up, any help would be great.

Have you tried plugging your external hard drive into the router?

The external hard drive only has a USB connection. Ive tried setting up a network and i can see the laptop on my pc but i cant access any files as it says i dont have permission.

On the Laptop it says that i dont have permission and i cant see any of the two systems. Its simply a blank folder

Any ideas?

The reason I suggest that is, that my router (BT Home Hub) has a USB connection, if I plug my external hdd into it. Then map that connection from within windows on both laptop and desktop pc - I can then access it on both laptop on PC without having the other one on!

As for permissions, just select properties for the external hdd under windows. Then add your user name or user group to all permissions.

The problem is that i cant see anything when im on the laptop, it doesnt show that it can see the PC. Am i setting the network up incorrectly?
