It depends on how you want to do it.
If you want to get to the files then you could use an FTP server running on your machine with the files and copy them to your laptop. Then play them locally with WMP. You will end up with two copies one on the laptop and one on your desktop at home.
You could set up a UPnP server (i think VLC can do this) over a secure IP and port or use a VPN to steam/play the files from yor HDD.
You could also use XP Remote desktop, VNC or LoginMein to connect directly to the machine and run WMP or similar. This would play them on your desktop at home but the audio would be sent to your laptop.
You could try all of these while on your home network to see which you find easiest/best.
