At that price Im guessing its "maxtor" before seagate bought them out. Has it got a 5 year warranty? Maxtor gave out 5 year warranties because they break, its renowned for poor quality drives which get hot.
You can get Seagate Barracuda 320gb ones for £40 on the net. You even get a thermaltake cooler with them.

You will never get a good deal in pc world... never. Ive learned this the hard way! The best thing about maxtor is that they exchange drives with no questions asked.

Although Ive lost 2 Maxtor HDDs ( probably overheating in External cases ) within the last 6 weeks, I also have several internal SATA ones which are 3-4 years old and and a 3 year old external one which has stayed reliable..so far
I guess what they may have is poor Quality control , not nessesarily "poor quality drives"

That is nice to know....Seagate, Western Digital and IBM have also had their fair share of dodgy drives .. in the past

Maxtor does exchange drives but the drives are sometimes worth less than the lost data on them. I lost over 100Gb worth of Images, thankfully also on DVD-R's ( moral: backup onto something else )

To be honest PC World is generally poor value for money but it isn't true to say you "never get a good deal from them".. I have more than a few times but only because I know what to say and ask for when I get there having done some homework.

Sometimes they have surplus stock and have to shift them at less than internet prices.... for a while then quickly revert to "normal" prices

I think the moral is to shop around.. sometimes internet deals seem to good to be true because they are
And the other.. Hard drives are not infallible

Re: 320GB External Harddrive for £69.99 from PC World

I was going to buy one, but as I already have 330gb on my pc, which I use for personal and business. I did'nt see the reason for have another 320gb on top of that, so I passed on this offer, but the prices are coming down so much over the last year, and prices will keep falling in 2007.

Tesco are selling DVD players for £18, that just shows how things are getting cheaper in the electrical market, as the demand keeps going up, the prices keep going down.

Ive never really thought about it like that but I suppose you are right. I agree WD aren't always perfect, again... poor quality control. Ive had one last nearly 10 years (still going) and another that didnt even see it through the warranty period.
Ive just got a grudge with maxtor really . We've had two go now the second was an exchange for the first. I think the second might even still be eligible still.

Well purchased one of these babies at PC world today and I have to say i'm quite impressed. I have just finnished copying all my data from an old drive to this new one and I can hardly tell it is on.

It comes with a two year warranty.

Stan..

Re: 320GB External Harddrive for £69.99 from PC World

My local independent PC guy has Lacie USB/Firewire external drives at £60 for 160GB.

Sure it's more money per GB, but they are sleek brushed silver things designed by Porsche and look the business.

That Seagate 360GB thing is HUGE!

Pablo

EDIT
Now I've seen the same Lacie drives in Staples even cheaper. 250GB model for £70.

Cool looking drive at a cool price.
