PS3 and Dolby D HD DTS HD

Does anyone know whether the PS3 will support any of the new HD audio formats?
If so how will I get them into the analogue inputs of my Denon 3803?

Dave

the PS3 will support a number of formats, including 7.1 digital audio, Dolby TrueHD, and others which I am not sure of!

It supports bitsream output of DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD. It will also internally decode into LPCM.

Does you amp have HDMI? If so does it support multi-channel LPCM via HDMI? If the answer to both is yes then you can output next gen multi-channel sound to your amp.

If not then you are limited to DD/DTS I'm afraid. Standalone players have 5.1/7.1 outputs to connect to the same on your amp, however the PS3 doesn't.

Re: PS3 and Dolby D HD DTS HD

It is a pity someone doesn't make an HDMI breakout cable, I'm thinking an HDMI socket on one end then an HDMI video plug and 8 phonos on the other, surely this is possible or if it a cases of decoding a digital signal a standalone box which decodes then outputs the analogue channels

Hmm I've been wondering about this myself. Getting analogue outs of a HD DVD/Blu ray player is fine but consoles don't have the analogue outs so I'm sure someone will come up with a cable solution. I suppose you could get a scaler/processor if you have lots of connections though I'm not to clued up on the tech and I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap.

Re: PS3 and Dolby D HD DTS HD

The is much more than a cable. It is an receiver and 8 channels of DACs and all the associated electronics!! That will be serious money.

Re: PS3 and Dolby D HD DTS HD

But my denon already has 8 channels of DACS?

You Denon does indeed have DACs however as it does not have HDMI inputs (based on info I got from a Google) then you have no way of getting the data from your PS3 to your receiver.

Traditional connections - such as optical or coaxial - cannot support the new codecs hence why you need HDMI (either v1.3 for bitstream or any version for multi-channel LPCM). Ergo you need to convert the data into analogue which is where a dedicated player offers so much more than a PS3 - it will do that and then you can feed it to your multi-channel inputs in your receiver.

The other option is to upgrade you receiver - however HDMI units capable of handling multi-channel LPCM tend to be around the £800 mark so it may be cheaper for you simply to get a dedicated BD player.

Re: PS3 and Dolby D HD DTS HD

Rasczak has said it all above. Your current kit does not give you multichannel access to the DACs, hence any HDMI to phone lead will need DACs.
