Re: 6 Months from now.............

ohhh i dont know about that, far too many closed minded zealots who would rather cut off fingers than give any money to a format that sony is behind.

It will be interesting to revisit this in 6 months though!

I'm sure that's not the case - I should imagine the vast majority of people will buy both formats eventually. Certainly with Fox exclusively backing BluRay I couldn't imagine being without my BD player - ditto Univeral and HD DVD. Furthermore owning both allows cherry picking - take Terminator 2 for example - I could have brought the BD MPEG2/DD copy but I should imagine the HD DVD VC1/DTS-HD will be significantly better.

Indeed I should imagine that by this time next year there will only be a handful of single format fans left on the forum - I predict BadAss and Packetfront! Ultimately though anyone who does stay single format is only seeing themselves off...

I will never buy both formats, i stand by Blu-ray as the winner.

Why shall i pay for HD-DVD when i don't need it?

Good for you - I hope you don't miss too many movies whilst you wait for a winner that may never happen.

Re: 6 Months from now.............

The more i think about it the more angry i get that they couldnt get their act together and avoid this fiasco

I own the 360 hd-dvd addon and will buy a ps3 (main reason for games) so ill have both but i can see myself buying all my movies on bluray apart from and hd-dvd exclusive ones as it seems like a safer long term bet as the ps3 will not be going anywhere for the next 7 years (at least)

but i see no short trem solution to this format war the players are still far to expensive for mainstream takeup

Yeah, but the only major studio there is Universal and yes I know what Pathe and Studio Canal have in their back catalog before you mention it again!

Fox/MGM, Disney and Sony are FAR more important than anything else on the list.

And just like HD-DVD supporters wishes studios jump ship to their format, BD supporters are allowed to do the same as well.

I would argue that there is no such thing as a less important studio - surely if it has movies you want and doesn't support your format then your stuffed - but I don't disagree your general point. BluRay does have more studio support - but, like HD DVD, it is nowhere near 100%.

Well if you know what is in the Pathe/Studio Canal portfolios you know Universal aren't the only major studio...

Indeed - and I would say the only one totally entrenched in their format is Universal (for HD DVD) and Sony (for BluRay). Everyone else could jump one way or another, or go dual format, or decide neither format is making enough money to support. Studio support could go anywhere...

Perhaps because I'm presenting the facts as opposed to your rants - unlike you I do not deny there are extensive BluRay only studios. And unlike you I am not saying just buy one format - I am highlighting why sensible people need to buy both. The difference in the 'lack of support' for each format isn't nearly as big as you try to imply.

...just for your reference much of Lionsgate's portfolio can be found coming to HD DVD via Studio Canal - and Miramax titles are already on HD DVD (Derailed for example). And even some of Sony's portfolio is held by others in different territories (Basic Instinct 2 for example). Sorry Packetfront

Are there absolutely no films that you'd want that are HD-DVD exclusive? Surely you just appear to be cutting off your nose to spite your face?

No one is predicting (except some "forum" experts ) an early end to this format war, so until dual format players come along, we are going to be stuck with both formats. You either buy one format and miss out or buy both and enjoy all the films you want.

For some that may be prohibitive financially, but for others like myself, see that as the only option. I could of course wait, but I'm a bit impulsive

Actually the way things are going I suspect the vast majority of people will say to hell with both of them and either ignore HD just subscribe to Sky.

I think the possibility that BOTH will fail because of the format war is under represented here.

This could be SACD vs DVD-A all over again.

Certainly the fuss about capacities tec is irrelvant - it's what films come out on the two formats that will determine it. And at the moment both camps selections are **** poor.

Personally, I've subscribed to SkyHD and will probably go HD DVD because of the dual-format disks as I don't intend having a new player for every TV in the house. But I've already bought the only disk in the catalogue I want which isn't on Sky.

You are betting on a losing format, you don't have the support and the consumer doesn't decide who will win, the CEO's does and they have already signed the contracts long term for BD

Life is hard for you now eh?
