PC giving me grief

Not strictly an HTPC question (couldn't find a generic PC section) so here goes:

I'm running a virus check right now but I have AVG, Firewall, spybot & pest patrol running at all times.

I use XP pro. I've set it up so I have to logon. File sharing has been setup (used to share my dreambox folder for recording).

The sharing (right click) option has changed to a basic "add it to the shared folder" option- no permissions etc show.

When I try to start cmd from the RUN prompt it gives me a "not recognised as a win32 application" type message.

Winamp gives some sound driver error message.

Very pi**ed off.

Ideas? Nothing installed lately apart from the DTS plugin for winamp but think it was screwed before that.

Re: PC giving me grief

can you use the browse feature and point it to cmd or try the comand prompt from the star menu. This would rule out a virus if these both worked !

Re: PC giving me grief

Cheers for the reply.

cmd was a bit of red herring. cmd.exe from RUn works fine (my PC at work must have something in the PATH to make it work).

It's the change of the SHARING tab that is the pain- there is no "permissions" box anymore.

No virus found.

Re: PC giving me grief

In windows explorer go to TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW > ADVANCED SETTINGS

then untick USE SIMPLE FILE SHARING

You'll get your Permissions / Sharing tab back

Re: PC giving me grief

If I untick it I get no sharing on the right click at all.

If I tick it sharing returns but it is the basic tab, not the one with user permissions. All the boxes are also greyed out and not selectable.

It's almost as if it's not in workgroup mode (as it were). Is there a service that needs starting?

It's been fine for the past 18 months and I haven't changed any settings.

Re: PC giving me grief

you need FILE AND PRINTER SHARING FOR MS NETWORKS installed I believe.

You add this as a service under your Network Connection.

Re: PC giving me grief

Already installed. It's been working fine until today.

Now there is no way to set permissions by user on any of the folders- the basic file sharing doesn't offer the option and when I untick it there is no SHARING AND SECURITY on a right click.

Thanks for your reply

Re: PC giving me grief

right then, i just fired up an XP Pro machine...

even with Simple Filesharing enabled I get the SHARING AND SECURITY option when right clicking on a folder!!

When I right right click a folder and select PROPERTIES I get

SHARING tab with Simple Filesharing enabled
SHARING & SECURITY tabs with Simple Filesharing disabled

not sure if that helps, but your XP Pro sounds a little borked, have you tried a system restore ? Alternatively cursing Mr Gates and kicking the machine might help

Re: PC giving me grief

Thanks for the replies.

I tried to check my user permissions and couldn't. Turns out the Workstation and Server services weren't running and I couldn't restart the Server service.

Doing a reboot/ error check now.

Will let you know (fingers crossed).

Re: PC giving me grief

And once again the reboot saves the day (or it may have been the volume check; I tripped the power off last night... oops).

Thanks for all the replies
