A friend has asked if I can locate a NEW turntable that plays 78's. After much browsing and no success I thought I would ask you guys. Does anyone know if these are still produced?

Cheers:(

This is a bit like a sketch from Not The Nine O'Clock News! Ha, Ha!!

But seriously, I bought one a few years ago for my uncle. Thorens still make them. Try here (http://www.thorens.com/). Not cheap. Don't think there's currently a UK distributor but you might be able to import. There may be others available.

I would try contacting Rega, as they used to do a 78-RPM version of the P2, although it’s no longer listed they may be able to help you.

Splimcity, my Dad passed away a year ago and I have a stack of 78's in my garage. No idea of prices but I know he had some gooduns, so he told me. If your friend gets a 78 player maybe he could give me a pm.Theres quite a few, may make the buy worthwhile ?.

I know that you said new, but a good condition Garrard 401/ 301 with a Rega or SME arm would probably see out most other decks for 78's and would be good for LPs as well.

It's still available!

I suspect it will be until Rega decide to stop making the P2. (Give them around 50 years then!)

I believe a 2nd hand Linn LP12 will do 78's also.

Most second hand LP12s only play 33RPM General (Nirvanas & Valhallas - although later Valhallas were supposed to have 33/45 switches), unless they are fitted with an 45 RPM adaptor (this is regarded as a sacrilege by real LP12 nuts BTW as it stuffs the sound) or they are using a Lingo or upgraded PSU IIRC. Ive not heard of 78 RPM adaptors IME.
