Problem: Both WMP 11 and Zune can see the Xbox 360 on the local wired network, but the game console can't see the pc in order to share media. I called XBOX Live support, and they couldn't solve the problem after 40 minutes.

Background on the problem: I'm not alone - check out http://forums.xbox.com/333/ShowForum.aspx and you'll see a lot of people voicing similar complaints. Even in this forum, too.

My network: Broadband cable connects into WAN of DI-604 switch router (latest firmware upgrade, UPnP is enabled, router is supported by Xbox). Two wired ethernet LAN connections run out to pc and Xbox 360.

Xbox 360: Except for media sharing, the console has full Xbox Live connectivity.

In the System blade, it is currently not connected to a computer. I purchased the xbox 360 last week, so was never previously connected to a pc.

When I "Test Media Connection":
Network Adaptor = Wired
IP Address = Confirmed
PC Selected = Failed

Under "Network Settings":
- the Xbox Live Connection is fine: all Confirmed, and NAT is OPEN.
IP Address is 192.168.0.101, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, DNS settings are Automatic, and both Internet Gateway and Primary DNS Server are 192.168.0.1

PC:
The Windows Firewall is off. The only 3rd party protection I have is Norton Antivirus 2005, which is set to Permit all WMP and Zune program activities.

All Windows updates automatically download, security and otherwise, including Service Pack 2 and Microsoft Net 2.0.

Looking at my Services, WMP network sharing / Zune / UPnP / SSDP are all automatic and running ("Started").

Running ipconfig /all, I get:
C:\Documents and Settings\custom1>ipconfig /all

Internet Connection Sharing is not turned on (Xbox connects through router).

Both WMP 11 and Zune are fresh installs (even tried uninstalling and reinstalling). And having just installed WMP 11, I don't have a DRM folder to delete (suggested in other threads).

The very fact that the PC can see the Xbox, but not vice versa, hopefully will lead to a solution.

If there's any more information I should provide, please let me know. Thanks again.

Have you tried Windows Media Connect? More people have success with that than with WMP11 though both work for me on my MCE2005 install.

GaryMo,

Thanks for your prompt reply!

No I haven't tried using Windows Media Connect, nor am I running Windows Media Center. But, since I know that others are able to media share via WMP 11 and a standard XP running Service Pack 2, I'd rather not be trying too many different software applications all at once. Hopefully I can solve the problem with my current configuration.

Thanks though.

I thought you have to have Windows Media Connect to enable sharing between a pc and 360.

Brutos,

Apparently, the functionality of Windows Media Connect is incorporated in Windows Media Player 11. That's why Xbox has you downloading WMP 11 nowadays: http://www.xbox.com/en-CA/pcsetup/XPSP2.htm.

Indeed, some - but not all - people can effective share media via WMP 11. It's a very frustrating problem, and I've only had it for 3 days. Some have been suffering for at least a month. :)

I thought you have to have Windows Media Connect to enable sharing between a pc and 360.

Not since WMP11 came out as it has media sharing built in.

In answer to the original posters problem, You have gone into the PC`s sharing settings (media player>tools>options>library>configure sharing) and set the 360 to allowed ?

Also when i set mine up mine if i tried to test media connection on the 360 it came up with the same message you are getting "PC selected=failed" but i then just went into the music folder on the 360 and selected PC and it listed all the music on my PC, Worth a try ?

I have a simular problem. Media connect all worked fine and was streaming to my 360 but as soon as i installed Media Player 11 the 360 can't see the PC where as the PC can see the 360. Removed media player and went back to media connect but that now has the same problem

I had the same problem, up untill I installed the Zune software it was all working fine, but I managed to get it working, here is what to do..

Configure you firewall, refer to xbox site how to so it
In Zune disable media sharing
Make sure Media Sharing is enabled in Media Player 11 and it can see your 360
On the 360 in the Video Tab, select Computer, when it says it can't find it should be an option to link a different computer to 360, select this and it should detect/show your computer, follow the rest of the steps and it should be working.

Think the 360's PC Detection just needed to be refreshed that's all.. probably because of the Zune Software which is Based on Media Player 11..don't think you can link the PC to 360 with the Zune software, have to use media player 11

Pretty simple really, I have a D Link-DI-784, UPNP Enabled, but just a silly problem really, blame it on the Zune Software..

Carlos:

1. Yes, for both WMP 11 and the Zune, I have media sharing on, and can "see" the xbox 360 (with a green checkmark) in both media players. I've tried disabling and re-enabling sharing a few times, to see if the 360 just needed a "refresh".

2. After I test the media connection and get "PC Selected - Failed", I don't have access to any music (or any other media) folders.

Meansizzler:
Firewall configuration: I don't have a software firewall, Windows or otherwise. My router's firewall is still active, but I don't think that blocks communication inside the lan, just between the lan and the internet-at-large.

From your description, it seems you had media sharing working, lost it after installing the Zune software, and then got it back up by refreshing the connection. I've never had media sharing work at all (but have been trying hard for 3 days!), and consequently have nothing to refresh. :)

Thanks for everyone's efforts though. I've also posted in a Microsoft network newsgroup. We'll see. :)

Like I said Disable it in Zune and Enable it in Media Player 11 then refresh, If I was you i'd uninstall Zune completely and get it working with Media Player 11 first by refreshing the connection as I think the Zune software is the fault.., I got it working first time in Media Player, just enabled Media Sharing, it saw the 360 and I set it to share content with it, and then from the 360 searched for the PC, found it straight away and all done.., I have a similar router so it's not a firewall Issue, if you have Norton Antivirus or any antivirus try disabling it and do what I said above..

thats because wmp11 disables media sharing, you need to set it up again in the wmp settings.

Ah,i reinstalled windows a few months ago and wmp11 beta (now wmp11) wouldn't find my 360 so i had to install Windows Media Connect to fix it.That's why i thought wmp11 didn't work on it's own.

The other thing i found is that even though the 360 showed my pc was connected i had search for my pc again to get it to reconnect.

Meansizzler:

I disabled Norton Antivirus, uninstalled Zune, then disabled and renabled media sharing on WMP 11. Still have the happy green checkmark in WMP 11, but no 'awareness' of the pc from the xbox 360. Thanks for trying though.

Thansk for that.its almost solved my problems ! I can now see music and pics on my pc but not vids.Any idea why ? They are in the same folders.
Also, how do i share more folders or is it all thru my docs now ?
