Gadget Show last night
Did anyone else see the Gadget last night on channel five? They did a review of a Navman, Garmin and TT 910 and then did a test of the TT910 and a MAP by being cabbies for the day. The TT 910 came out on top and also beat the map.

Worrying thing was that the TT910 tried to get the driver to do a 'U' turn at a place it was illegal to do one. They also do not take into account all the 'No Right Turns' or other illegal manouvres that local authorities legislate for and can and do cause a lot of accidents every day now. You only have to watch the daft things some drivers do trying to carry out their navigation system instructions.

As with any piece of technology, it needs used in conjunction with a bit of common sense and not instead of.

If you continue until its safe then the software automatically redirects.
Using some codes you can the TT910 for £320. Great bargain.
I missed the gadget show too. Hope I get to see it. Might be able to find it on you tube?

You only have to watch the way they drive to see the drivers that don't have that ' bit of common sense'. If they did have it, how many less accidents every year would there be?

Cocked up on directions to football ground though, proves how far behind the maps on these things really are. I would have preferred to see them pitch the satnav/s against each other rather than satnav vs. map/intuition in the cabbie contest.

Re: Gadget Show last night
Why did they eliminate the Garmin after the first two tests? Time to power up slower than one of the other units by three seconds?
I didn't buy my Sat Nav because it powers up in 27 or 30 seconds (I usually find it's a lot faster) and think it's fine - I'm not saying it's the best but I would liked to have seen it run the full race, not eliminated in the car park. Or was the cost of taking three cars to Coventry beyond the budget of the Gadget Show? Maybe Jason needs a wage cut!!!

Fair point, but how up to date do you think printed maps are? In the days before Sat Nav, the general concensus was that maps were out of date by the time they were printed. I served for many years in the Fire Service and our local topographical skills were probably second to none, but our maps that were incidentally updated and printed in-house on the Brigades CAD System, in my latter years, were always out of date; and that was with a turn around of a few weeks, from notification to produced document. In the commercial world you can multiply that figure by any factor you would like to think of; and then probably double it.

Re: Gadget Show last night
I suppose thinking about it in the cold light of day it was more a POI out of date problem than a map out of date problem.

Each Sat Nav had the task of finding a route to Cockbridge. The Garmin didn't have the name in it's database, with that and the slow startup time GS eliminated it.

Re: Gadget Show last night
Why did they compare the top of the range TomTom 910 with the Navman 40i, of course its going to come out on top particularly because of the text-to-speech function on the 910 which they said was one of the reasons for it being the winner. I do wish the show would try and level the playing field a bit when they do these gadget comparisons.

Re: Gadget Show last night
One thing I've just noticed is since the show the TomTom website is now giving you the opportunity to check whether your map is up-to-date as well as offering 20% discount to update it. Although I do think that they should offer a free subscription to map updates for at least 12 months after purchase.
In fact if you look at it closely they actually make great store about the 1000s of new updates made in the last 6 months, yet further down the page they then say that maps included with the 510/710/910, One (new version) are all up-to-date
