What subwoofer do I put on my VERY short christmas list??
Hi all
Just for starters (and for Nimby's sake) this is my list in order of all my consideration over the time I have been finding a subwoofer and you may see that my search for bass has only got bigger: BG Gemini, Bk XLS200, BK Monolith, Velodyne DD12 (second hand), Dynaudio sub 250, 300, B&W PV1, SVS SB12 + , SVS PC 20-39 and god knows what else!!!
I am allowed ONE subwoofer with my birthday and christmas prezzie combined into one bassy present!! But, yep! I dont know what go get!
Im allowed anything up to £800 (can stretch a PB12 with my money) and at the moment my pen is itching to jot down the PB12 in Piano Gloss Black "COR!"
But in my very small room is it impractical? How much room do those ports need to breath against the rear wall??
Please guys help me just one more time, so I can put down a subwoofer and leave it to rest!!! But let me make it clear: I want deep bass and I mean deep!
Thankyou all!
DD

Re: What subwoofer do I put on my VERY short christmas list??
PB12/Plus 2 in textured (not gloss) black for £869 as the ad banner says
use it as a buttkicker device by using it as your armchair
ok its above £800 but i'm sure you'll enjoy it...lol
i would have thought in your room the PB12/Plus would be a little on the large size for the room you are in at the moment, but you can always turn it down...heh......however for being future proof, if you will move out sometime within a year or two, its worth saving having to buy another bigger sub....
the ports can be 4in from the wall, thats how close mine are give or take usually....
it'll go nice with the choice of speakers too.....heh

Re: What subwoofer do I put on my VERY short christmas list??
Can you have the PB12 sideways? If I do this it will give the ports much more room to breath and look more pleasing in my room! Wardrobe has got to go! lol The trouble is I may have a small room but I need a subwoofer that reaches down low aplenty! But of course most of them are big aplenty too!
4 inches is fine for the ports!

Re: What subwoofer do I put on my VERY short christmas list??
Don't you just love Xmas & Birthdays it is always a good excuse to treat you're self to something AV
I suggest a day out or a couple of days out to have some Dems of the subs in question...AV Sales would be 1st port of call, as they have most of the SVS subs on dem and the rooms are great with some large and a couple which are small so it will give you a good idea how they will sound in both
Then befriend a couple of BK owners and politley ask for a listen
And after all that decide on which you would like and i am sure it won't take you long as you have only been searching for how long

Re: What subwoofer do I put on my VERY short christmas list??
I reckon a Monolith, or PB12 plus. BK XLS200 probably too small for what you want. Perhaps a SB12+ with a view to getting a 2nd. DD12 would be nice, but won't get a 2nd hand for £800.
You should also look out for a 25-31PC+. It has more welly than the 20-39 in 25hz mode, and you can tune it to either 20, or 16hz, and I believe it has the same freq. response as the 20-39 in these modes. Being not quite as tall as the 20-39 may be good for you.

Re: What subwoofer do I put on my VERY short christmas list??
Stick by your guns with a PC+ Cylinder. They are so easy to set up in a small room, and you don't have to worry about room for breathing ports ect. Any of the sizes would probably suit, but i'm obviously bias towards the 20-39PC+ which provides us with more than enough grunt and low down stuff
Why not chuck a Wanted thread in the classified's. That way, when one comes up for grabs you'll be the sole owner of the thread, and no-one can jump in before you. Then keep an eye out for people who may be letting one go (and i can think of at least one person) and give them a reminder.
I still can't believe that Ian let you miss out on his one

Unfortunately you have to be over 18 to trade in the classified forum.

Due to my inbuilt sense of fairplay as well as being an all round good bloke who knew that DD couldn't trade in the classified forum I did actually give him first refusal six weeks ago long before I put it up for sale but DD passed

Re: What subwoofer do I put on my VERY short christmas list??
Good on yer, Ian.
There is only one sensible option for a young chap in a small room:
The SB12+. Compact, light enough to carry, small enough to allow maximum flexibility in positioning.
Enough welly to satisfy anyone on music. Easily good enough for film. Avoids the upgrade bug.
Flexible controls and connections to satisfy any geek or nerd needing present and future compatibility.
In a package that is easily transportable now and in the future.
The young don't need giant millstones or white elephants.
They can start collecting those when they finally settle down.
Get the SB12+! Or we send da boys round!
PS: Don't get piano black! Totally impractical for anybody still being weened off sticky sweets.

You had to make do with the horn on top of the wind up gramophone

Yes, I very much gleaned from one of DD's posts that you had offered it, & he had passed it up. Very fair price I thought it was too, having paid £530 inc. delivery for my 25-31. I'm just rather confused why a 20-39pc+ is still on his list

Re: What subwoofer do I put on my VERY short christmas list??
Some of the suggestions on this thread are bonkers , you know DDs room is about the size of a hamsters wardrobe and he isn't likley to be moving to his own place any time soon? (at a guess anyway?).
Get yourself an SB12+ anything else is going to be a waste of money at best and worse, a pain to setup, positioning in such a small room is going to be very limited.

Re: What subwoofer do I put on my VERY short christmas list??
100% Agreed. Anything else will be hopelessly overblown. Yetserday, in a room 9x25ft approx, anything other than the room compensation on small was ridiculous. Unless you like your bass waffly and indistinct that is.

I dare say anything more than the SB12+, and it may be his very last av related present from his folks.
I guess the B4-plus is out of the question then
