Apologies if this is blindingly obvious, but I've been working on this little problem on and off for the past couple of days and have finally come up with a decent solution.
I'm sure you're all aware that .ts streaming to a Media Extender no longer works in Vista, a damn shame as most of the videos I watch are .ts files! I've played around with a few options. Transcoding didn't really work, as my PC doesn't have the kahunas to do it (I was a little surprised being that it's a A64 3700+ w/ 2Gb RAM). Also tried converting to PS instead but this was too hit and miss. Tried about five different programs and they all had some sort of issue. The most common one was video and audio losing sync after conversion (though this didn't always happen). The few I found which did seem to work ok on some streams, just didn't work at all on others. In short - I couldn't find one that worked 100%.
It was through nothing but chance that I stumbled upon the solution - well, a solution for me at least. TS Converter 2.5 (http://dvbportal.dyn1.de/download.php?file=tsconverter-setup-2.5.zip) is a superb little program. Basically (I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner), it converts .ts files to dvr-ms format instead - which is of course natively playable by both Vista MCE and Vista MCE extenders.
Now I'm sure the more technically minded of you will point out the shortcomings in my solution (and I'd be interested to hear them), but for me it's perfect. If there's a loss of quality I can't see it and the audio is all spot on too.
Comments please! :)
