Re: 160GB Personal Video Recorder with Freeview by tevion @aldi

Its decent, though there are mixed reviews. I've the PVR101 (which is the first generation 80GB model **) and its been fine for 11 months. These "twin" models don't allow two simultaneous recordings, but they do allow record one, watch another (channel or recording), or record one and pause-record another (aka "pause live tv"). Early bugs have been mostly ironed out through OTA updates (see http://pvr101.blogspot.com/), though some people have continued to report some problems.

Reports have been that new firmware to allow 2 simultaneous recordings to occur is suppose to be coming, to make it a "true twin".

Essentially its a good price for a 160GB "twin" freeview PVR, and Aldi do allow you to return them within 12 months for a full refund (no quibble guarantee) and the Tevion models have a 3 year warranty. Follow the links in that blog and read experiences, but for the price its worth it (so long as you are aware of potential bugs and willing to risk it), and if the bugs do surface you can at least take it back without no trouble.

** The second generation was just a rebranding to Tevion name and the updated firmware preinstalled instead of needing OTA. This is the 3rd gen whether its just a bigger HDD or other changes, who knows

Re: 160GB Personal Video Recorder with Freeview by tevion @aldi

Might be that it included the trailing bracket as part of the URL. My 11 month old PVR101 has gone back to Aldi's now - I got the "losing all your recordings" bug. I just said returning it as its faulty, and I got my money back no problem.

The "record two channels" is what the advert for the PVR101 said, so either its the same misinformation, or its an updated firmware (another forum has said that it was planned, so maybe its here (though will it bring more bugs)

Re: 160GB Personal Video Recorder with Freeview by tevion @aldi

Went into Aldi last night to find out about the Tevion PVR. Guy said they're getting 72 delivered on Sunday 26th so hopefully I'll get one.

He also said the Tevion 32" HD TVs sold out in 15 mins yesterday morning!!

Re: 160GB Personal Video Recorder with Freeview by tevion @aldi

Talking to your local manager is a good idea. I missed out on the initial PVR101's - getting there for 9.02am, I had a word and the manager said there most likely would be a second batch the following week - I went and they did get several more then.

Each store gets a limiteds amount - 72 sounds quite a lot, usually its a lot less, so maybe they are expecting (hoping) for a pre christmas rush?

It does sound like a genuine bargain. 160GB hard drive, twin tuner, dual record, 3 years warranty, £99. They are bound to sell out so best get in there early. Obviously, if it doesnt work you can take it back.

Re: 160GB Personal Video Recorder with Freeview by tevion @aldi

As with all true PVR's none have any means of recording from anything else. They only record the FREEVIEW channels.

If you want to record Sky you need a dvd recorder.

Not Surprised that the Tevion 32" TV sold out as soon as the stores opened. At £390
it was a good offer.

Unhappy Re: Aldi withdraw 12 months no quibble refund

I visited my local Aldi store (near Bristol) a few days ago and noticed that the sign advertising Aldi's 12 month no quibble refund had been removed. I spoke to the store manager and he confirmed that the 12 month no quibble refund had been withdrawn as in his words; "customers were taking the mick".

According to the manager it is now Aldi policy to give a refund if : (1)the goods are returned within 28 days from purchase (2)you provide the purchase receipt (3) you return all the original packaging and (4)the goods are in as new condition.

It is a shame that Aldi has withdrawn the 12 months no quibble offer but I suppose it was inevitable.

Thumbs up Re: 160GB Personal Video Recorder with Freeview by tevion @aldi

I was there at 10am to get one of these (didn't want to miss out!) and they were flying out the door - 2 in 3 customers were buying one.

Plugged it in to our roof-top aerial and it picked up all the channels I'd expect it to. User-interface and remote both could have a little re-thinking, but only took me a couple of minutes to get my head round them.

Issues so far:
  • Five doesn't receive properly, keeps jerking around
  • Slight stutter at start of recordings
  • Once the sound cut-out, but putting it on standby and back on again, it cleared up. (I'd been changing channels a lot, think it got confused)

I'll add more if and when they come up, but I'm very happy so far.
