EBay scam attempt

i avertised a camera on ebay yesterday as a buy it now item, early today i got a confirmation of it being sold.

Great i thought, thats quick, but smelt a rat as although the buyer had an english address and e mail, but had only joined yesterday, so had no feedback.

So i sent him an invoice, but thought to myself theres no way i am sending the camera until i amm 110% sure the moneys in the bank, even if it is by paypal.

Hours later he got feed back from 4 sellers, all saying the same thing Scammer
beware!!! and e bay notified me that he was no longer registered.

when i got home i checked my e mails, yep there was one from this guy in Nigeria telling me to post the camera to an address in Nigeria, once i got the paypal confirmation, apparently he also sends out fake paypal invoices as well
which i look forward to getting.

I would not think anyone would fall for this obvious scam, but sadly some people do.

So the moral of this must be Buyer and Seller beware.

Re: EBay scam attempt

seems to becoming an all too familiar situation.i dont think ebay or paypal do enough to ensure the seller or buyer is genuine.

didnt think members would be interested as there appears to be 2 kinds of camera users on here , one that uses good quality compacts and one that uses dslrs with all the lens
mine is a leica digilux 2, which is neither and was very expensive when i bought it and need to get top dollar for it, or i will keep it.

Strikes me, pretty much anything Nigerian (net-wise) needs to be avoided like the plague.
That's not racist, just my experience of scams and phishing.

i had exactly the same thing happen the end of last year, put on a camera at a buy it now price and it sold within the day, i then noticed the person had just registered the day before, so then i got the complimentary email asking if i would send it to her husband somewhere in nigeria, to which i politely told her to go **** herself, i was so annoyed, more so how they can click on buy it now and not pay, and then it shows as confirmed payment, i'm sure ebay could do a lot more to put a stop to this, anyway when i sell anything on there now, i put in big bold red letters will not be sent to nigeria or any other african country or eastern europe, and if you have'nt got at least 95% feedback contact me before bidding, this has worked so far, like you already said just a shame some poor sods fall for it.

Re: EBay scam attempt

i had the same problem a few months ago selling an ipod on a buy-it-now, happened 3 times on the trot, it a real PITA to go through the process of claiming your fees back from ebay. after that point i decided to never list anything "attractive" (like phone's, ipod, camera kit etc) with a BIN, these scammers tend not to go foerthe normal aucton style listings.

Re: EBay scam attempt

The ONLY way to prevent this is to use the Pre Approved Bidder facility. No-one can bid without mailing you a request to be added to the approved biider list. You can then make a judgement on their profile whether you want to allow them to bid or not. Probably puts a few off but after having a mobile with a BIN "bought" 4 times in a day, I never list anything of value without it.

Re: EBay scam attempt

I always add my own conditions to the bottom of the auction - in brief:

I only accept paypal if you have a confirmed address.

I never ship overseas, ever.

You don't get anything until I've got cleared funds.

I've only had one auction spoiled by a scammer and it was for a Land Rover (yes a real life size one) ... how the chuff they expected me to post that to Nigeria was beyond me.

Re: EBay scam attempt

For future reference if you are selling on ebay via Buy it Now there's an option in the 'Payment Options' section when you're compiling the listing to "Require immediate payment when buyer uses Buy It Now"

Basically the listing cannot end unless the buyer completes the transaction there and then using Paypal and pays for it.

(Which is great if you only want buyers to pay by Paypal - if you want a cheque, bank transfer, postal order etc. you cannot select this option as far as I'm aware)

Re: EBay scam attempt

I've had similar problems with 'Buy it Now' items, thats why I only use the auction now as these idiots get on my nerves.
