old batteries

I have a Sony DSC-P92 which has only occasional use. yesterday I tried to use the camera for the first time in 6 months. Would'nt turn on so assumed batteries needed charging(aa ni-mh). After charging, camera came on, but only operated for a few minutes before cutting out. Same with spare set of batteries.
Do you think a new set of batteries would cure the problem? The originals have had very little use with few charge/discharge cycles.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: old batteries

you could always use a voltage tester to test the batteries. They have probably failed through age tho.
