Sony 2010 - viewing DVDs

When I play a DVD movie on this TV, I get a black strip at the top and bottom of the screen. Why should this be? Shouldn't a wide screen movie fill the screen in all directions automatically?

Normal TV viewing is fine and the menu part of the DVD fills the screen as well, it's only during the actual movie itself.

DVD player is set to 16:9 wide and TV set to smart.

Any advice on settings much appreciated.

PS - it's a bit worrying as I read somewhere else about potential burn in on this screen.

Not necessary to ask the same question twice.
