BK Gemini?

Hello all,

First time in the sub forum so be gentle with me.

Im doing some buying this week and my new system will be fronted by a pair of MA BR2's. Ive been umming and ahhing about whether or not I need (can afford) a sub to go along with them and someone in the speaker forum suggested the BK Gemini.

I like the price and it seems well liked in here but the only thing worrying me is the size of my room which is 3m x 5m. I dont intend using this at excessive volumes as we are expecting another baby in March, will the Gemini be suitable for general usage in a room this size?

Re: BK Gemini?

Hi Bob,

Welcome to subwoofery

For your size of room a bigger sub would be better and I always find if the baby hears enough mental bass whilsts still in the womb it won't be disturbed by it when it pops out.

My 2 sleep through all sorts of bass, I know it travels but it doesn't seem to bother them as much as me tippy-toeing past their bedroom door at night

The XLS200 is probably more like it but all the BK subs get a good review so you can't really go wrong with any of them. You may just get upgraditus a bit sooner with the Gemini though

Re: BK Gemini?

I read pretty much the same thing about room size when I was searching the forum, might even have been one of your posts to be honest.

If I have to spring the extra for the XLS200 then I can get the matching MA BRW10 for the same price .. how does the XLS200 compare with other subs in this price range?

Re: BK Gemini?

I haven't heard either of these subs, as far as BK are concerned I only go by opinions I trust on this forum and the XLS200 is certainly well respected. I haven't heard anything about the MA sub but that doesn't mean it is not good by any means.

Because BK sell direct they do make major savings which are passed on to the consumer. Unless the MA BRW10 is a truly exceptional Subwoofer for the price, my guess is that a BK of the same price will be better.

One thing for sure you will have no problems selling the BK on the forum if you decide for some reason you don't like it.

Hopefully someone will have heard the MA sub and give some helpful input.

Adam

Hello Bob,

Welcome to the deep.

It doesn't compare to subs in it's price range. It compares to subs 'costing' a lot more on the high street. It's sold direct from the manufacturer to the end user. The lack of dealer margin to incorporate, tends to distort it's placement in the market.

A good example is to compare the specs of say an MJ Ref 200 at £650 with the £300 XLS-200. Then go figuer.

I'm not saying the BRW10 isn't any good, I haven't heard it. But whilst there are exceptions to the rule, history has tended to show that 'high street' subs can be bettered, for less, or stuffed for the same money.

Re: BK Gemini?

I might add, that based purely on manufacturers specs, that some of the new range of Jamo budget subs appear worthy of inspection.

Dingwall (for he treads a different path) has mentioned their SUB 250 as worthy, although we await the figuers to prove this one way or the other. They certainly seem to promise value for money and I for one, would like to see a mainstream manufacturer actually start to offer real VFM like these Jamos may suggest.

LOL.

Aye, the Sub 250 is superb. Does exactly as it claims (adding musical bass to small speakers).

Re: BK Gemini?

I had the exact problem you are trying to avoid getting. My room is of similar size to yours and I bought a BK Gemini to add some bass to my Wharfdale Diamond 9.1's.

It didn't quite do the job, the room was just too big. I spoke to Tom at BK and they swapped it over for a XLS200 and the difference is huge. It is a fantastic sub, beautifully made and superb sound.
