Directed by Sidney Lumet at the height of his success, its a police thriller starring a young Al Pacino.
It has probably dated fairly badly and isnt exactly going to be Home Cinema demo disc.
It is however, one of those films that has been unavailable on DVD so far, without a reasonable explanation.

Never appeared yet on DVD and I'm glad it's coming :)
One of the finest movies that Pacino has done. What makes it even better is that it's a true story.
If you can get yourself a copy of the book. It's amazing too ;)

Thanks. Think I'll check it out on TV first or wait for the price to drop. ;)

Blimey, haven't seen this for an age. I remember the first time quite vividly because, way back then, it was very meatie. It's one of those films that no doubt has sociologists spouting, "We told you so" what with all the 'canteen culture', 'brotherhood of the law' and patriachichal structures etc. Except for one very important difference, this film does not tred lightly in casual clothes and favour the minority from outside the minority. It kicks booty.
Early Pacino was all the more credulous and could play the hero-victim more convincingly, IMO, and this fits the genre of Dog Day Afternoon and Scar Face's grungy worthiness. Though this would be best viewed not after seeing Stella Street any time too soon:clown:

Serpico is supposed to be a true story, wasn’t there an other film out just a bit later based on a true story, slightly similar where there was two cops, and they had such a good arrest rate the were nicknamed Batman and Robin. Anyone know the name of that film. And no it had nothing to do with the Caped Crusader.
Oh Squirrel, Serpico is good.
They even made a TV series with David Berney.
There is also a book out by Peter Maas on him.

Actually, now I think of it, wasn't Serpico the play that Max Fischer staged at school in "Rushmore"? (I'm sure Mac will know this ;))

Serpico's an excellent film, one of those great 70's police thrillers that they made so many of. Got mine booked.
It'd be nice to get a directors cut of William Friedkin's Cruising, or any version for that matter, on disc too. Nice to see Panic in Needle Park's coming aswell, another good early Al movie. He did some great work in the 70's.
