Question Acer Laptop with MCE from Comet - Free Vista Upgrade??

Hi,

According to Comet, if you buy any Acer laptop with Windows MCE, you can have a free Vista upgrade if you send your receipt to Acer.

For some reason, I have my doubts about this offer (especially because its Comet). Can anyone confirm such an offer?

Thanks, Ash

Re: Acer Laptop with MCE from Comet - Free Vista Upgrade??

Virtually every desktop you can order form Dell offers the same, so I assume it's (now) a common offer.

Re: Acer Laptop with MCE from Comet - Free Vista Upgrade??

I've just ordered an OEM MCE CD from Dabs. Even this comes with a Vista upgrade (I think it was about £1 extra for the version with the upgrade).

Dabs quicklink 4BG3WS.

The info on the dabs site gives a link to all the info for OEM system builders. In my case, I will be the OEM supplier to myself. All looks straightforward enough, but it does say that the end user will have to pay a media/p&p charge.

Even so, it's a cracking offer.

Contacted Acer UK Pre Sales helpline today to equire about free Vista upgrade and was told that they are not aware of any such offers.

I don't know who's telling the lies or who's telling the truth!

It is definitely legit. I am getting inundated with them at work.

It is something from Microsoft to stop people NOT purchasing PCs at Xmas because Vista has been delayed to ~March 07.

It's a fairly recent offer, so the droids in sales might not have heard about it yet. It's also possible that they have a stock of OEM licences they need to trudge through before they get the offer.

Buy somewhere else if they won't play! Check the links from the dabs item - it's all definitely legit.

Reading the pdf on the dabs website I'd say it's far from free.

It mentions that a Win XP Media Centre machine will be upgraded to Vista home Premium for a "nominal cost" + shipping and handling.

Re: Acer Laptop with MCE from Comet - Free Vista Upgrade??

i wouldn't touch acer for a mce PC, they are well know for selling low spec mce machines which cannot meet the requirements for running recordings or continuous play.
They use subcontractors for repairs who are just interested in turning round product instead of fixing a problem.
Pile of bleep in my mind...

Yes, I read that too. There are some further words explaining about the nominal cost - basically the cost of producing and packaging a CD (although this isn't explicitly stated). £10 would be my guess - any more and MS would be in the news for the wrong reasons again.

Of course, Windows shouldn't really cost more than £10 outright. When I rule the world...

Re: Acer Laptop with MCE from Comet - Free Vista Upgrade??

the offer is from microsoft.

they supply an upgrade token with XP home, pro and MCE now until vista is released, and yes its to stop the drop in sales until vista is released.

Re: Acer Laptop with MCE from Comet - Free Vista Upgrade??

Bought my Acer desktop in jan/feb? and it wasn't clear if I was eligible so followed the link below and I am now an owner of a vist home premium system. Had to pay £14 postage fee though.
