I'm looking to buy my son a laptop for university from £500~650 up (plus the cost of MS Office), basically the scapping into dual core and dedicated 3D hardware for Doom 3 etc.

Any recommeded graphics chipsets, screens or particular machines to look out for? Expanding the graphics memory is an option in the future.

I'm assuming Centrino Duo vs Turon dosn't come into it though I'm happy with AMD. Also getting 2GB of system memory won't specifically help games?

Starting point is a Dell (don't yawn) Inspiron with Intel 950/Radeon X1300 and standard/TrueLife/Ultrasharp 15.4" widescreen.

I thought about Alienware for gaming laptops but they are above your budget.

Prices start at £698 for a very good spec - certainly tempting to up the budget - thanks! Great comparison of graphics chipsets too.

Like-for-like I'd chose Intel CPU: AMD Turon is dual core too but shares memory rather than having dedicated for each individual core.
