Jazz u like?

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone can suggest any decent jazz artists/CD's. I am looking for recent stuff along the lines of Miles Davis, Kind of Blue (absolutely love that album!:cool:), but I am not very 'UP' on the current jazz scene and so need some guidance.

Sorry for the vague question!

If you like Kind of Blue check out Miles Davis cd's such as Round about Midnight, In a Silent Way and Miles Smiles also John Coltrane's My Favourite Things and A Love Supreme - Herbie Hancock's Giant Steps, Speak Like a Child and Impyrean Isles or if you like female vocal jazz take a listen to Diana Krall.

Some good advise would be to find a local library that rents CD's - they often have a very good jazz sections for you to experiement on.

If you want some female jazz vocalists try Claire Martin or Jane Monheit, I've only just started listening to jazz and these two are the best so far.

Yes I do like female vocal jazz so I will take your advice and look into the artists you mention.

Talking of female vocal artists there was an artist on the Jules Holland show a few months back, black lady with an absolutely amazing voice, but just can't remember her name. I think Jules mentioned that she had been on before. It was the same night where they had some rap act on (seemed to be about 40 members in the group!) Don't suppose I have given you enough info to go on!:(

Nice relaxing album but can sound a bit country and western on certain tracks

You seem to know your jazz.
Some years ago there was a Soul program on Radio 1 from about 23:00 to 1:00 on Fridays. He use to play jazz tracks each week as well. One week, get ready for this,……… a jazz harpist!…Yes....I think it was a woman and was very good any idea who it was?

I'd second the Diana Krall suggestion.

Try her "All for You" album - a dedication to the Nat King Cole trio.

Great songs, brilliant musicians and her voice is something else.

On top of this, it's one of the best, if not the best recording I've ever heard.

Could be Deborah Henson-Conant - the only jazz harpist I know.

Hmmm. I didn't look that closely on the CD web sites at the album covers!

Suppose it wasn't her then as I am sure the lady I saw was black. OK the challange is back on, anyone any ideas who she was?

all though not true Jazz, Erykah Badu has appeared with Jools and has strong Jazz influences in her music (and she is 100% black)

Cassandra Wilson es muy excellente!!!! Try BLUE LIGHT TIL DAWN. It's my fav. Her version of TUPELO HONEY with some lyrics from Hendrix's ANGEL woven in rulz! The title track isn't half bad either.

Patricia Barber's 3 best albums (IMO) have recently been re-released as SACD hybrids, NIGHTCLUB, CAFE BLUE, and MODERN COOL are very nice. Try one...

Manfredo Fest's JUNGLE CAT isn't well-known outside of South America. It's spectacularly good piano jazz. JUST JOBIM is nice too.

Paul Desmond's DESMOND BLUE is nice sax jazz.

Donad Byrd's BLACK BYRD is some nice bigger band jazz.

Spyro Gyra's IN MODERN TIMES is terrific. It's available as an SACD hybrid.

Jacintha's three albums are must haves. They're available as SACD hybrids on the Groove Note label and on garden variety CD's.
She may be the ultimate jazz singer...?

Bennie Wallace's MOODSVILLE has that 50/60's jazz feel...good stuff.

You should hear how Christy Baron turns rock and pop songs into jazz on her album STEPPIN'.

For guitar jazz, Lee Ritenour's FEEL THE NIGHT is hard to beat.

I agree that anyone with an interest in Jazz should like this lady. I have two of her albums and they are good.

There is a series of albums available "The Future Sounds Of Jazz" that is worth considering. These are available from Amazon in the US and Germany and also from Amazon in the UK (but they are much more expensive). These albums do stretch the definition of Jazz somewhat.
