Am 33 and have loads of 70's and 80's rock music,......the eagles, aerosmith, queen, dire straits, don henley...etc,etc.The thing is i'm getting a bit bored of it and I wanna get some new stuff, a bit more contempory.

Any recommendations along a similair line:)..............

Thanks...
Paul....

Same age here Paul so maybe our taste could be similar. I used to listen to a lot of the heavier stuff ie Metallica, Megadeth, Sabbat and stuff like that but, having mellowed a little in my old age my current faves are:

The Beta Band - very accoustic, deep, interesting music. Great for relaxing and even better if you have a good sound system.

The 'Hot Rocks' album is superb as is 'The Three EP's'........both are worth a listen.

If you wanted something a little contemporary then try the Foo Fighters or maybe Placebo.

I'm also a big fan of Grant Lee Buffalo..........Mighty Joe Moon is the album to get!

Jimmy Eat World's self titled album has a good mix of rock and acoustic songs on it. Also try incubus (but this may not be exactly your taste) cause they rock, and write nice tunes, some sort of spacey-funky, some pretty heavy.

I second Jimmy Eat World. And also Rival Schools.

Also worth having a listen to 'The Cosmic Rough Riders' album Enjoy The Melodic Sunshine..........although the lead singer has now left the group, it's still a good album

I third Jimmy Eats World, particularly their last CD. Incubus's last CD was also fantastic.

Also try Sister Hazel, Vertical Horizon, Tonic, Red Hot Chili Peppers, ..... more contemporary equivalents of stuff you already like :)

Although i've not heard it, the Chilli's latest album is reported to be quite weak in comparison to earlier ones.....

I have it on as we speak and it's great. Not as good as Californication (which I think is their best album), but very close IMO. :) I think RCHP fans who prefer their latter day style like it, whereas those who prefer the RHCP style of the early years don't like it. I place myself in the former category. :)

I'll recommend Rage Against The Machine as well (particularly their self-titled CD and "The Battle for Los Angeles")... with a warning that it may be a little heavy for Paul :)

Ah yes... Incubus. Quite consistently a band of genius throughout their whole career. Every album is a classic.

Also check out 'Anyone' by Anyone. Superb album.

And anything by Tool.

If you're getting bored with good 70's music it's time to be put down. If you are just bored with your own collection get some more good 70's stuff not this modern rubbish that everyone is recommending.

I saw Doves in concert last night. Ace. Would definitely recommend them.

I would also recommend U2s last album, as well as Aphex Twin  (Okay, maybe not Aphex Twin)

Well I don't make typos often, but that one was pretty bad. Thanks for making it worse Lex ;) :p

Doves are fantastic. First album as splendid as the last.

Last U2 album also great.

Will throw Coldplay into the mix too :)

From the choice listed you obviously like guitar solos?

Not exactly contemporary ,but what about Joe Satriani or Steve Vai-any solo stuff by them.

If you like the guitar solo in Hotel California(extended version)-you will love these.

"Surfing with the Alien" by Satriani-and "Passion and Warfare" by Steve Vai are good starting points.

Whilst on guitar solos, going back in time, find some original Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green for probably the best blues guitar solos of all time.(Fleetwood Mac Anthology.).

If you hear this stuff, you will take your copy of Layla by Eric Claptout-sorry,Clapton-and smash it into tiny pieces.
Doug ;)

Lovers of guitar music could give the California Guitar Trio a listen. they specialise in a mixture of updated classical music (on guitar, of course) plus modern and self penned stuff like the intro theme from Pulp Fiction.

Their web site has samples of their music on http://www.cgtrio.com/music.htm

Nice to hear someone mention Grant Lee Buffalo. Thought that 'Fuzzy' was the best album though. You should check out 'Mobilize' by Grant Lee Phillips (lead singer with GLB). Absolutely fantastic.
Both solo albums by Ryan (no, not Bryan !) Adams are also worth checking out.
Oh and 'The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads' by Lift to Experience is also rather good.

If you want a comtemporary version of the kind of stuff you like(d) already, I'd suggest 'Live'. Sort of a modern Seventies type rock act with some great songs. I'm not into them hugely, just thought their album 'Throwing Copper' was pretty good and it seems as though you'd enjoy it based on your original post.

For something a little more melodic and easy listening, how 'bout The Goo Goo Dolls.

BTW, Jimmy Eat World do indeed kick major bum. If you like them, give Alkaline Trio a go as well.

Or if you really want to move into some US power-pop-punk stuff, you can't go wrong with Bad Religion and/or The Decendents.

Don't forget to check out Frank Zappa if you haven't already - Joe's Garage is a good one.

If you want something a bit more different then what about The Fall? An aquired taste and you've got to be careful which album you pick but something like "Middle Class Revolt" or "A sides" (i.e. the best of) are very good.

Matt.

The Eden Project actually! :p It was great, they have a large arena there and they light up the Biodomes in funky colours. They have been having all sorts of concerts there this summer, mostly of 'world' music. I would highly recommend a visit. ;)

Had this same problem about 6 years ago, then someone bought me the Great Discography by Martin Strong. Trawled through this picking out the best albums ( they are given marks out of ten ), worth every penny of 20 quid, I now have hundreds of albums with loads of different styles of music.

Try Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys (theres a band I would never have listened to), Pixies ...SurfaRosa, Radiohead......OK computer, Stone Roses...Stone Roses, Nirvana...nevermind, Rage Against the Machine....burning man album, then theres Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa, how about Eva Cassidy, Ella Fitzgerald, the Smiths, Daft Punk, Air, muse, white Stripes..white blood cells, the strokes, black rebel Motorcycle club.....theres loads, just pay bargain prices and explore.........happy listening.

Staind - Dysfunction
Rage Against the Machine (self titled)
Nirvana - Nevermind
Alice in Chains - Dirt

They're kinda middle of the road, not too heavy but very exciting.

Paul....

If I were you I would check out 'Thunder - Laughing on judgement day' and 'Extreme - pornographiti.'
They are just like the stuff you are used to only more modern. Nuno from Extreme is one of the greatest soloist of all time on the guitar - IMHO.
Trust me, you would love both of these albums.

RHCP californication is also superb.

Try:

The Kills, only an EP out at the moment, I think, but are great.

The Chrimea, saw them live the other day, know little about them, but are fantastic.

Garlic, I think, are fantastic and sound very american/indie. Their album, The Murky World of Seats is well worth a listen.

Queens of the Stone Age. Fantastic, and have a dark, heavy sound.

Also, Mark Lannigan, who guests for QOTSA is well worth checking out. Esp Field Songs, or any of his Screaming Trees stuff.

And Masters of Reality are probably the worlds finest rock/blues band.

Sleater Kinney: Riot Grrl-ish, pop/rock.

Buff Medways: Garage/mod rock?

13th Floor Elavators: 60's rock, but could have been recorded yesterday, and Roky Erikson (vocalist) has a voice to die for.

How could I have forgotten about Chris TT?

Get his albums, 'The 253' or 'Panic Attack in Sainsburies' and look out for his single in Feb, called 'Eminem is Gay'.

The B-side will be a spoof of QOTSA 'feelgood hit of the summer' and will be called 'headcold bit of the winter'.

He sounds a bit sort of rock/folk, but is fantastically funny to listen to or watch.
