Is the Radeon X1950XTX not better ?
On the Nvidia side I think it's between it and the 7950GX2.
If you look at Toms Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/graphics/charts.html?modelx=33&model1=517&model2=519&chart=231) then it really depends what you do with it as to which card wins.
I read that the GTO version can be overclocked to even better speeds than the out of the box GTX.
They're both PCI-E so you shouldn't need to change mobo + processor unless you're running AGP.

I would go for the x1900xt, over at OCuk there have been alot of people complaining about dead 7900gtx's

Not really, that's the 7900gt.
The 7900gto is a better buy than the x1900xt, the gto is as powerful but is cheaper, quieter, cooler and less power consuming.

Ive just ordered a 7900 gto due to alot of internet buzz about this card. For £100 or so less than a gtx your getting an underclocked gtx which in most cases can be overclocked right back. The card is physically exactly the same as a gtx including its superb cooler. I just couldnt pass it up as i dont normally rush to buy the best card available (like the 7950 gx2, or 1950xtx) i allways wait to see whats the best bang fro buck card. At the moment there's no denying the gto is the best bang for buck card. some people have clocked speeds above gtx levels but to be fair not all.
Anyway its true the 1900xtx is faster but its more expensive and noisier and the release of the gto more or less makes the gtx pointless. my gto is due for delivery today hopefully but it may come on monday i will let you know how good it is then.

No, it's the whole 7900 series, mostly the gtx, even the 7950gx2 has had problems also

LMK how you get on.
Thinking of getting one of these for my new build and overclocking it to :censored: with watercooling.

I am looking at getting this card. My Geforce 7950GX2 suffered from faulty memory and I was given a refund which has left me minus a GFX card. I obviously need a new card but it will be replaced in about a year so don't really want to go and spend another £400 on a new 7950GX2.
However I don't have an SLI motherboard so would only want to run a single card and I don't tend to overclock. Would this card still be a good choice bearing in mind I am running a Viewsonic VA2012W widescreen monitor at native res?

Apparently the x1950xtx is the best there is ATM. Just what I have read.

Well for me it was a no brainer. the 7950gx2 while insanely fast was too much for me, as were the equivalent ati cards. The 7900gtx is the next single card down from that in the nvidea range. With the release of the gto you have the same gtx card but as i mentioned clocked down a bit. even if you cant quite reach gtx speeds with overclocking its still incredibly great value for money. I have a 22" WS (most likely the same res as yours) and expect to run most games at this res. at £170 or so its substantially less costly than equvalent ati and nvidea cards. It doesnt have hdcp but who needs it for the foreseeable future.
I've got it confirmed for delivery on monday so i'll keep you posted and i'll try benchmarking it soon after. I cant wait to play oblivion better than my 6800gs (the last great "best bang for buck" card i bought) managed - though it didnt do too bad mind. As with everything i buy i did quite a bit of reseach on this card before shelling out, the following is one of the early reviews of it, i also follow hard forums video card section to see how alot of the Americans are clocking this card.

Nvidia cant do AA and HDR at the same time only ATI cards can do this.

My x1900xt won't. The chuck patch stopped my video input from working (which I use everday) and I can't get GRAW and serious sam II to do AA and HDR at all.
So ATi cards won't do HDR and AA out of the box, and it won't work with all games and it may not work at all.
Windtalker: 3d mark results please? Also where did you get them for 300?

The 7900GTO IS a 7900GTX. Same board, same cooler, same chip, just a different bios so has lower stock clocks. It should be able to be easily overclocked to GTX levels and would probably be able to have the GTX bios flashed onto it, would have to look into that one tho.
I would take this as a sign of NV wanting to clear stock of GTX's for G80 release.
Bargain of a card but the x1950XTX is still faster, even beating the GX2 in some games.

Not being funny, but because you can't get it working doesn't mean that the series can't do it.....and the fact it can do it on a handfull of games means it still can......unlike the 7900 series zero amount of games that can.
GTO @ GTX speeds is the best bang for buck at the mo, but the fastest single card at the mo is the x1950xtx, plain fact.
TBH I wouldn't bother buying any top line card at the moment, not with G80 only weeks away from launch. Then dependant on price/performance of G80 current top end should plummet in price.

I have HDR and AA in Flat out 2, Sin, Half Life Lost Coast and Just Cause, in fact the only game I needed to hack to get HDR up was Farcry with 1.4 patch on it. ATI cards can do AA and HDR at the same time. I also have serious sam 2 knocking around I will install my copy and see what it looks like.
What is a chuck patch?

The chuck patch is what you need to get AA+HDR working on Oblivion. Half Life games that support HDR will play with AA on any card. Afaik it's a different kind of HDR, someone will most likely be able to explain better technically, but I know it works on my rig with HDR with AA enabled.

Thanks for the promt reply and explaination. :)
I have read that the Nvidia biased games such as Farcry and Oblivion wont have the option for AA and HDR unless you mess around with hacks. They say that when the next gen of Nvidia cards come out this will all be fixed by way of an update patch. Cheeky buggers hey.

Yep, floating point hdr and AA won't work without a patch. Games like need for speed mw and the other games you mention will even do aa and hdr on SM2.0 cards (x800 etc.). Try GRAW and serious sam 2 demos, I haven't got either of them working in HDR and AA even with a patch. Oblivion works with a patch but it caused other problems for me.

Right just recieved my 7900gto this morning. Ran back home at lunch time to install it but no real time to play!!! Since i finished work tho i've been fiddling about a bit with it.
First thing is it is huge, gorgeous cooler but i was afraid it wouldnt fit, lets just say it fits very snugly (maybe too snugly). Powered it up and loaded up the drivers. No major hiccoughs so far.
3dmark 05 was 7079, bit of a disappointment really as my overclocked 6800gs managed a respectable 5348. Next my3dmark06 score was 4535 (sm2=2184, sm3=2237, cpu=900), better as i mangaed just 2502 with my 6800gs. correct me if i'm wrong i think my cpu score really let me down with this. I think i was getting a bit too excited after reading some of the scores on hardforum reaching 10,000+ on 3dmark05 and 7000+ for 06 (with single overclocked cards). I'm yet to overclock this card so i may get a 5% improvement or more.
Now the real test is the games, and here i was more than pleased with my purchase. FEAR at max res (1280/960) and max effects (no soft shadows) on my 6800gs would average 32 fps, not too shabby. With the 7900gto same setting and with soft shadows on i get and average fps of 68, thats double my old card, sweet.
Then i loaded up oblivion. Now here on my old card in the outdoors i'd get fps below 25 on average and into single figures when multple characters on screen. This was with 1600/900 res and everything else max including hdr (self shadows off). With the new card and at 1680/1050 res i get fps of 30-40 and even with multiple charcters it doesnt dip below 20 (ok except when i'm stood right next to an oblivion gate it gets very choppy). This is with everything maxxed even self shadows.
So overall very happy with the purchase. I have an effective doubling of framerate compared to my last GPU. i am stuffed a bit by my cpu but not a major thing. Oh and i havent even overclocked it yet.
my pc is a p4 HT 3ghz, 2gb ram, 500watt psu running on a 21" samsung 215tw.

Your cpu is really bottlenecking that card, especially in 3dmark05 which becomes quite cpu limited when using powerful cards like this. At least you'll see a big improvement when you next upgrade your cpu.
