I'm not sure if people will find this helpful or not, but lets give it a try and see. I'll update this whenever new titles are announced. I'll only add it to this thread if it has a release date. Feel free to let me know what I'm missing or tell me of any corrections and I'll update the thread.

Information on many of the upcoming releases for both formats is scarce, so don't assume there is no TrueHD etc just because it's not yet listed.

Please keep this as an information thread and avoid debating who has more/better releases. Thanks.

Ok guys, what have I missed and what have I got wrong?

This is the sort of stuff that should be a sticky, we currently have two threads that are stickies that don't deserve to be. Namelly the HD DVD vs Blu-ray - which do you think will win? and the If region coding is not crackable on HD DVD and Blu-ray, will you still buy either?

King Kong is still over a month away, Audio specs havn't been announced. Universal tend to at least have 1.5Mbps DD+ tracks anyway. So even if it doesn't have TrueHD I'm sure it will sound fantastic.

Just had a thought, wait till it sells well then bring out a TrueHD version to make more £. :mad:I know, it does seem a little backward thinking that Universals biggest title to date will more than likely have an excellent picture, but not quite the soundtrack to go with it  I'd like to know why the 3 Fast & The Furious films also had their TrueHD soundtracks dropped at the last minute as well.
And another vote to make this thread a sticky. :smashin:

Should we also include the European and Japanese releases (perhaps only the titles that aren't available in the US)?

Noggin1980

Should we also include the European and Japanese releases (perhaps only the titles that aren't available in the US)?
I definatly think so and have reserved the 5th and 6th posts of this thread for that purpose.

However I havn't decided exactly how and what to show yet and I'm not confident enough in some of the information ie plays listings to put it up incase it misleads. So I've been putting off writing it.

For HD-DVD I definatly think a europe and asia section is needed, I too think just the releases that aren’t available from the US would make it easier to read . Does anyone know of a good site in English where I can see the asian titles and hopefully read reviews or specs, I've only heard about people importing brothers grimm, Equilibrium and Jersey Girl so far. There also seems to be a bit of confusion about weather there will be forced subtitles on French releases and studio canal haven’t announced English releases yet. It's all a bit up in the air atm.

For Blu-ray I'm not sure. Since people will need to pick one region the Asian releases are pointless I think. So should I do a European section including every release? or just leave blu-ray with the American releases only? I don't think there has been any titles annouced in europe that america doesn't have.

thoughts?

lfletcher
13-10-2006, 10:09 AM
www.CDJapan.co.jp will give you releases for both HD-DVD and Blu Ray - I think the specs for released titles are ok, but pre-release info isnt normally very accurate.

For Blu Ray - Japan and Korea are both in Region A, so will play on the US players.

If you want any help with the Japanese releases let me know as I tend to keep quite up to date with whats coming.

Hang on, is Saw 3 even out this year? Can someone confirm this and when it is out in UK CinemasYes, when they released the second one, they had planned to release the third one a year later. From IMDB Saw 2 came out 28 October 2005 and the third one is scheduled to be released 27 October 2006 (US and UK release).

Should they not release HD DVD versions? Or could they not make then dual layered one layer HD DVD and the other DVD?

DVD Pacific have despatched 'The Thing' to me already, despite it not being officially released until the 24th Oct. If only I had something to play it on LOL.

I'll get a XBOX 360 HD-DVD drive when they're released in a month or two.

I seem to remember buying a DVD disk ('Contact' IIRC) before I had anything to play that on too. :)

Very useful list - thanks noggin.
I think it'll be important to clearly indicate regions for bluray (because it has them) - not so much for hddvd. You could almost just include euro/asian discs in the main list with a little tag to six its not from the us.
Bluray is tricky. I'd like to see japanese releases as they are the same region as the us. Them perhaps region b later on?

A few updates,

Blu Ray
From Hell - BD50, AVC, BD-J enhancements
Rising Sun - AVC

HD-DVD
Lady In The Water - TrueHD

And a few new (tentative) dates,

02/01/07
Lucky Number Slevin
Clerks 2
Pulse

Is it worth tracking codecs on the Blu Ray titles as this subject seems quite close to peoples hearts?
Also what about titles that have 48kHz/24 bit soundtracks (i.e. Dinosaur has a PCM (48/24) soundtrack rather than just normal pcm and I think other new Disney titles do as well).

Disney - All releases mpeg2 apart from the following, which are AVC - Great Raid, 8 Below, Glory Road, Gone In 60 Seconds and Brothers Grimm.

Warner - All VC-1 (inc Superman Returns) apart from the following which are mpeg2, Good Night, and Good Luck, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Rumor Has It, Training Day and Full Metal Jacket (you might want to double check that list, but I believe its correct).

Fox - Seems to be some conflicting reports at the moment (some sites say all Fox titles are using AVC, but the original and subsequent press releases indicate AVC and mpeg2, so thats the list I'll work from). All mpeg2 apart from the following which are AVC, From Hell, Rising Sun, Behind Enemy Lines, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Speed.

Excuse me for being a clueless about this - what's the difference between True HD, Combo, those with neither etc?

Noggin1980
23-10-2006, 5:16 PM
Combo - The disc has the HD-DVD movie on one side and a DVD movie on the other side. This is good if you want to use the movie in a different room without a HD-DVD player or the car or to lend the movie to your friends. It also allows people who plan to invest in HD-DVD but havn't yet to buy this movie and still play it. It has the downside of being slightly more expensive.

True HD - is a codec for audio. It's lossless so the soundtrack will sound great. Better than a movie without this feature.

Info gleaned from HMV, Play and Amazon UK. Don't know if people would prefer UK releases in a separate sticky to U.S.? Could get a little large as a worldwide thread. May also help with the dreaded region coding.

It would also be helpful I think if people with UK players could state which imported titles on Blu-ray will play. Ditto, which UK titles play on imported players if people fancy trying.

They support Blu Ray, so for the time being certainly no HD-DVD version of either in any region. For the record Disney have also stated that they have no plans to release Pirates 2 anytime soon (or Cars) on Blu Ray - I believe they want a bigger market for those two. The first film had a December release date on BD in Japan, but thay got pushed till next Spring.

I'm not bitter, just disapointed christmas won't be as perfect as I hoped. It's our first every christmas in our own home. I'm sure the lack of HD won't matter much, family is the main thing. I'm sure I'll be all excited for it again once the release date gets closer again. was just annoyed with it this morning. My enthusasim has gone for now though but I'm sure it will be back shortly.

I need the player to do Region2 unfortunatly otherwise I'd have brought an A1 along time ago. Haveing 2 DVD players isn't something my wife would like, we have enough boxes under the TV as it is.

Just played a copy of King Kong HD-DVD I got from Movietyme. To cut to the chase, it is the best transfer to to HD-DVD I've seen yet, IMHO, slightly better than Batman, T3, Chocolate factory, Apollo 13, and Troy which were all pretty good.

They all do close up shots well but IMO, the most tantalizing moments are the long distance shots when your can see subtle details in the distance and subtle movement. In Batman begins I must admit to feeling slightly disappointed (wait for it) on the long shots of Gotham at night. Maybe as its all CG, the source material itself wasn't that detailed. But anyway, that's what I thought - it is a good transfer otherwise.

If I copy and paste the first few posts here and leave another 6 blank is a mod going to delete the thread again?
Also what forum should it go in? The original thread was in here. My new one got deleted because its a disc based thread, but I still see individual movie discussions happening here? Any chance we can get a subforum for HD software either in here (making it similar to AVS) or in the Movie forum?

Some excellent titles coming soon: Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Alien vs. Predator, Hitchhiker's Guide, Planet of the Apes and Commando are all must buys IMHO.

I not for Poseidon it lists the audio as DD+ - I thought it was going to have a Dolby TrueHD track?

Or is there another way of finding out what codec is being used on releases ?
