pci-express connector?

i have just picked up a used msi 6800gt graphics card at a good price,it is going to replace a 6600gt,i have noticed it seems to have a 6pin socket at the back which i assume is pci-express?
my psu is fairly new, which has a 6pin pci-e plug, the shape of the plug connector is wrong (is there more than one type?) the socket on the card is
top row: rounded-rounded-square. bottom:square-rounded-rounded.
my plug is top row: rounded-square-square bottom:square-rounded-rounded?
anyone know why this is?

My PSU (Enermax Liberty) came with 2 PCI-E leads, and the plugs are as you describe, and one is plugged into my XFX PCI-E card. Im not aware of there being more than one type of PCI-E plug, so it seems like something odd with your PSU. Which model is it?

Re: pci-express connector?

found some info on a PSU of that name here and here (no mention of the'jsp' though). The 4pin connector is explained on there (12v to the motherboard).

Re: pci-express connector?

sorry taken so long to get back on.been watching that shower of w*****s show us up again.
anyway,it seems that a plug that takes a feed from a molex connector is supposed to be with the card, which i hav'nt got.
so more digging to do to see if i can get hold of one.

Is it a modular PSU, if so then one end goes into the psu and the other into the graphics card, reason one end does not fit in your card as that is the end that probably goes into the PSU, it's different so people don't connect them the wrong way round..., read the manual that came with your powersupply, it's there for a reason..

Re: pci-express connector?

hi mean.the pci-e plug from my psu is part of the fixed wiring just like the molex connectors but from speaking to others they say this one is supposed to connect onto the motherboard to power a pci-e graphics card.
it seems nvidea use a slightly different plug which comes with the card, and as i said earlier i hav'nt got it.

Re: pci-express connector?

I have my 7800 GTX connected to my power supply with one of these.

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...source=Froogle

Just plug both connectors to the power supply, via MOLEX.

Re: pci-express connector?

thanks for the help chanser, cheif, i have been told by a pc builder the plug i need is called a sli connector? it's not the same as a pci-e connector.i have looked on scan but can't see if the plugs six pins are the same shape as my graphic card socket.(as explained in my first post)
logically your 7800 socket should be the same as my 6800

Re: pci-express connector?

Personally I would take the plunge and buy the connector that I posted a link to, It's only a couple of pounds + delivery. I have never heard of an sli connector (only a sli bridge connector, which connects 2 graphics cards together). I am pretty sure this will do the job mate.

All the sockets on graphics cards (pci express) are the same. I have owned about 4 different pci express cards from ATI and Nvidia and they are all the same connector.

Can you post a picture of the cards socket?.

Re: pci-express connector?

Yeah what Chief said, most new graphics card come with a PCI-E connector. Normally when you buy a new graphics card they normally come with a PCI-E to molex adapter.
