Ive got a Canon Lidescan 60 which Im very happy with both the photo scanning and the OCR. About £45 in PC World.

I second the recommendation for the Canon. Good for general scanning and the bundled OCR (usually Omnipage) works well too.

Omnipage is suppose to be the leading OCR software...

Implemented a couple of high end scanning solutions for a couple of banks in the past and Kofax Ascent Capture is the corporate choice, bit of a pricey beast though. if budget's are tight and your not scanning too much then the bundled Omnipage will do the trick, worth upgrading to the non free version if you get a discount voucher with your scanner though.
