Ive been playing around with Vista for a while now and come across an interesting feature.

If you click your "rating" in Computer - Properties you get a list of scores for individual processes of your PC.

Processor - P4 3.4GHz - 4.0
Memory (RAM) - 1791MB - 3.9
Graphics - Nvidia 5200 GeForce - 2.0
Gaming Graphics - 2.6
Primary Hard Drive - 400GB - 5.0

Giving me an overall score of 2.0 (takes the lowest apparently)

I have no idea what the top score is, but post yours up here and we can get a good idea of what a good spec for Vista is.

I have a Dell 9150

Processor - P4D 920 2.8GHz - 4.7
Memory (RAM) - 1024MB - 4.5
Graphics - ATi X600 - 4.1
Gaming Graphics - 3.7
Primary Hard Disk - 250GB WD SATAII - 5.4

So my base score is 3.7

My overall Windows Experience Index is 4.2. I'm currently at college, so I can't give the individual scores, but I do remember my graphics scored 5.9.

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with HT (530)
RAM: 1024 MB (2x512)
GFX: nVidia 6800 256MB
SFX: Soundblaster Creative Live! 24-bit
HDD: 30gb (partitioned - I'm dual-booting with XP Pro)

Quick way to get to the score/sysprops is to press Winkey + Pause/Break ;)

Anything above 1536 (1.5 GB) qualifies for high-end vista usage.

Atleast thats what it said in the help file.

If you look at the few examples above already, the score must be based in the speed of memory access as well as the amount, or something weird like available virtual memory!

Atleast thats what it said in the help file.Ok I know where I got this from, I found it again in 5728. Just remembered it different...

<LimitApplied Friendly="Physical memory available to the OS is less than or equal to 1.5GB - limit mem score to 4.5" Relation="LE">1610612736</LimitApplied>

That figures as I've got a 1GB of RAM and much score is 4.5 for RAM (on 5600 & 5728)

They might have tweaked the equation that calculates the WIE base score. That would explain it.

My overall score remains the same as 5600 - 4.2.

Are these scores out of ten? If so, my 2.9 is not too good despite the fact it seems to running like a dream so far on my 4 year old PC - complete with Aero glass. What kind of monster PC do you need to get a top score?

What kind of monster PC do you need to get a top score? :confused:No one really knows, everyone thought it was out of 5 to begin with, but then sub scores sometimes went up to 5.9 so that went out the window. Expect more information on the Windows Experience Index as Vista goes RTM.

Generally feeling is that it will be used along side system requirements as a more help guideline.

So for example, say your on Vista and your overall score is 3.5. Then you go to the shops and see a nice piece of software, along side the system requirements it would have something like:

Your system needs a Windows Experience Index rating of 4 or more to run this software correctly.

Is anybody having a problem with the WinSat test whereby it freezes when it gets to testing your HD's? The only information I've heard about this is that it might be related to me having installed Vista on a secondary HD but, the strange thing is, the test worked on the Beta 2 version of Vista

It's built into Vista. If you download and install the Vista RC1 preview (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx) that's floating around the 'net, the first thing it does after you've installed it is run the test (Winsat) and gives your PC a score based on various categories. But, again, only if you install Vista.

You're absolutely right :smashin: I assumed it was Vista only but it comes included with the new Vista Upgrade Advisor. That's what I get for not reading up on the subject :)

Anyway to use it in XP, first install the newest version of Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx), (if you haven't already) then you need to open a command prompt. To do this go to start menu, go to run, type in CMD and press enter. Then using the cd command go to the folder Vista Upgrade Adviser is in (it should be "C:\Program files\Microsoft Windows Vista Advisor\"). Then enter this command for a fancy graphics backdrop - similar to what you see when you first install Vista: "Winsat aurora" (without the quotes).

You can then use this command to run tests on various parts of your OS and Hardware. For a full list of commands, and subcommands, for the Winsat command try this website (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QTFairUse). Unfortunately, I don't see a way to produce a lovely graphical presentation - with marks for each sub-section - like you can in Vista.

You can take any build of WinSAT from any build of longhron/vista and it will work on XP. You have the luxury of the winsat help file now, before I had to manually find the commands (before beta 1) using hexworkshop.

You don't need to install Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to get WinSAT.

Microsoft also presented a new tool called WinSAT. A generic benchmark utility that will analyze a given Longhorn PC to determine what features of Longhorn can be enabled. The tools can analyze parts of the OS such as Direct3D performance, the compositing engine, Memory performance and Hard drive speeds. The results are stored in XML files an since the tool is maintaining a history of these files, other applications can parse these logs and make decisions for themselves what features to enable. The WinHEC version of Longhorn already includes the first alpha version of WinSAT and everyone is encouraged to try out this new tool. (just type “WinSAT.exe” from the command line in Longhorn). For this release you still have to be logged in as an administrator to run the tool. In later versions this will be allowed for limited users – if the general Enterprise Policy has not blocked the tool. One other very interesting thing is that this tool currently runs on Windows XP as well. Just copy the WinSAT.EXE to your XP machine and run it. I will give this a try right after WinHEC

Is there a way of finding the rating without installing vista?

The advisor only seems to tell me what in my pc will work, can't find anywhere for score?

You could try WinSAT, it won't give you a score or nothing.

Not while the scores are "out of 5.9"

Or at least thats the way I read the way it works.

I read somewhere that 5.9 is currently the max but they will approximately once a year increas the scale, so with service pack 1 the max might then be 7.9 as equipment improves.

There are also other caps like if you have 1gb of ram you can only score 4.5 no matter how fast it is.

Yup, I know...

Ok I know where I got this from, I found it again in 5728.

I would suggest you purchase a decent mobo for overclocking to these speeds, I have an EVGA 680i SLI and can recomend it.

I would buy a quad core, if i could afford it, also another 8800 for SLI - lets be realistic here though, what do you want out of your PC? I want to be able to drool over my games, and I do, for now. Lets wait and see what DX10 games can deliver though!

If you want a true performance tool for your PC, try 3Dscore '06 - I get around the 12k mark :)

I was just pondering whether to get 2 8800 GS instead of one 8800 GTX, don't know it that would be better. From my PC, I want to be able to play stuff like Crysis or nxt gen games without having to stump up again, and i want a top notch HTPC for my forthcoming 1080 projector

Anyway, as this is off topic, perhaps I'll start a new thread...

So I started off with Index Base Score 3.5

Modified Dell OptiPlex GX260

Processor (P4 2.4GHz): 3.5
Memory (PC2700 768Mb): 3.9
Graphics (Nvidia 128Mb 6600GT AGP): 5.9
Gaming Graphics (Nvidia 128Mb 6600GT AGP): 4.8
Primary Hard Disk (Maxtor 40Gb ATA133 ): 5.3

Then upgraded CPU from P4 2.4GHz to P4 3.06GHz with HT.

Processor changed from 3.5 to 4.1
and stangely memory from 3.9 to 4.0

So new base score of 4.0

Now upgraded to 2GB RAM. PC3200 OCZ Platinum.

BUT Score has now gone down!!! :lease:

Processor (P4 3.06GHz): 4.2
Memory (PC3200 2048Mb): 3.5

Gaming Graphics (Nvidia 128Mb 6600GT AGP): 4.2
Primary Hard Disk (Maxtor 40Gb ATA133 ): 5.3

Base score gone back down to 3.5 :suicide:

Thanks... have checked... doesnt let me change anything.. just reports Memory speed 266MHz... which is odd... as supposed to be 400MHz for PC3200???

Also when I run CPUZ, this reports for each module:
DDR, PC3200 (200 MHz), 1024 MBytes, OCZ

2Gb is going to be better than 768Mb I had before as less swapping... but its odd about the speeds... will have to do some more digging. Going to try a Readyboost USB Stick as well.. just to see what this does to scores.

Quite surprising the aero graphics performance is so good - I guess much of it is down to CPU speed.

Still debating whether or not to put in my Geforce 7600 GS, which will no doubt give me a better score, but i had a few hiccups on XP (kept bluescreening).
I was also going to boost my RAM to 4GB but the new one takes DDR2 and i only got DDR.
And then i was going to add my 300GB IDE drive, and found out that the new one is SATA.
Thank god i got a decent spec as it would cost me loads to upgrade from that.

you do have a fair point, 5.9 or even 6 for that matter is a bizarre number to stop at.

I had seen bits about the numbering being upped in the future but hadn't seen anything concrete stating that 5.9 was the max and not 6 when I had a brief google back then. Lol it would makes sense non?

Read the following...

The scale of the Windows Experience Index ranges from 1 to 5.9. The higher the score for a particular component area, the better experience you can expect from that area.

The scale is useful when comparing hardware components and when comparing whole PCs. The scale was created so that a full score point of improvement usually means significant additional capabilities in the particular sub area, while a better fractional score means an incremental improvement. The integer number of a base score is referred to as the Windows Experience Index level. For example a PC with a Windows Experience Index base score of 5.3 is considered a level 5 PC.

Over time, as systems become more advanced, we expect to introduce higher levels of 6 and beyond. This will be done approximately every 12-18 months, as new innovations in hardware become available. When new base scores are introduced, existing scores will not change (i.e. a PC with a base scored of 2.2 today will score a 2.2 in the new updated index, unless its components are upgraded).

Base scores of 6.0 and higher are not defined yet. They will be defined when the time comes and new innovations in hardware allow new capabilities. From past experience, it is expected this will happen at a rate of once every 12-18 months.

Yes have seen it many times

Still doesn't answer the question why 5.9 was chosen as the highest gold release score though does it.

Just seems like a bit of a plucked out of the air number

Cable Monkey

Or maybe it was chosen as a sensible point which can be raised to accomodate better hardware without the need to re-score existing hardware. What is the betting that by the time we get to 10 Vista's replacement is on the horizon?:)

Damn the hard disk has let me down. The odd thing is that my Processor is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6200+ @3000 MHz under Pc Wizard with a TDP of 65Watt, which is different from all the write ups about the Amd 6000 processors, for example 125 watt for the TDP.

Anyway it runs prefect, I love my AMD.

The scoring system seems flawed e.g

My ram score went from 4.8 with 2gb to 4.7 with 4gb, i know it does not use the whole 4gb but how can the score go down!!

I can tell the difference but the scoring system seems to think it makes it worse

i think the AMOUNT of ram only limits the score you can get, to up the score you want to make sure the ram is in dual channel mode, that its the fastest ram possible (probably 800mhz) and also manually setting the timings in the bios often increases the score (i.e 4-4-4-12 2t for 800mhz ddr2)

Nah the system is flawed, i can re-test and get better score, then re-test again and guess what ?

I can get worse or better score, the highest i have had for the ram was 5.4 and the lowest was 3.8

All tests done with nothing else running, its a silly system.

Hes probably running under dual channel mode, if you have compatable motherboard place your memory in the same coloured slots i.e both the red ones if all your motherboard ram slots are same colour it will not run in dual channel mode.

Here is mine. The c2d is actually running at 2800. Brand new hardrive sata2 and still only get 5.7 what do you need to get 5.9.

been figuring out how to fix this. I used to use copied versions of Vista well because i could and i DVD copies of Vista come with all versions on it an you could use anything from basic to ultimate for 30 days...well i made a vista ultimate "vista lite" version because I stripped out all the BS i never used. well the problem is i got a 3.1 as the lowest subscrore with ultimate which were my graphics scores...when i did the system restore CD from HP that has home premium i got with my PC i now have a 2.5 graphics subscore. how the hell does that happen. i have done all the win dows updates...what else can i do. im way too confused. please help. if you need PC info. its an hp dv9608nr. i have gone to the hp site to dl their drivers after running the perf test and after getting the latest hp drivers i still get an 2.5 score when i know i got a 3.1 lowest subscore on graphics when i ran the vista lite version of vista ultimate. what am i missing?

Mine is 3.3 or 3.4. Which I know to be low. It changes each time I do it. The slow part is be my Graphics card (see spec below). Eveything else is 4.5 and above.

I only use the box for general purpose surfing net and mostly Vista Media Centre, where we watch and record TV and also watch DVDs. No games or other clever stuff.

Anyone care to comment on whether a graphics card upgrade is worth while for these uses?

I did try to get a new card before I moved to Vista but could not find any better low profile cards for PCIE slot. Plenty of full height cards obviously. Again any suggestions.

Thanks

Hi CookieM
I had the same problem with a q6600. the solution was to de-link the cpu from the ram speed, i reduced the multiplyer to 2.5 from 3X i was then able to take the ram to 336mhz giving me 3.26GhzX4 the ram speed is 336X2.5=840Mhz.
raised my ram score from 5 to well over 5.9
now just limited by hd which i can't be bothered changing.

That is one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever seen. I know some people upgrade a graphics card JUST to get a higher score in benchmarks, even though their current card will play EVERYTHING fine, but upgrading your computer to get a higher score in Vista is downright silly.

Almost maxxed. Bloody Ram letting me down. It's 2 GB's of Corsair XMS as well. I#ll have to OC to get a clean sweep. Although to be honest. I think these scores mean absolute diddly squat. It's just a great way for Microsoft to say "Wow, look how powerful your PC is, you'd better get on our store and buy some stuff to take advantage of that right away!"

On my Acer Aspire 1690 laptop I get the following scores...

Processor - 1.7Ghz P4-M Centrino - 3.6
RAM - 1GB DDR2 - 4.4
Graphics - 64MB ATI X700 - 2.6
Gaming Graphics - 64MB ATI X700 - 4.3

Not bad for a 2 year old laptop, although the Aero performance seems to suffer from the restricted graphics card.

I have a base score of just 2.1 but everything is working fine on Vista Ultimate.
From yesterday I now have a base score of 5.0 after upgrading motherboard, RAM, CPU, garphics card and power supply. Virtually a new PC really as all that's left from the old one is the case, hard drives and DVD writer.

My Dell Inspiron 1720 Laptop scores are as follows:

Processor - T7500 2.2 Ghz Dual Core - 5.1
Memory (RAM) - 2GB DDR2 - 4.8
Graphics - Nvidia GeForce 8600MGT 256MB DDR2 - 5.2
Gaming Graphics - 5.3
Primary Hard Drive - 160GB SATAII - 5.1

Only modifications since new are Intel Turbo Memory 1GB (Santa Rosa Platform) and I have done a BIOS overclock of the Graphics Card using NVFLASH and NiBiTor from Core of 475Mhz/Memory 650Mhz to 600Mhz Core/675Mhz Memory. Was using x64 Vista Ultimate, now using x86 Vista Home Premium with Ultimate Extras due to compatibility/performance.

OR YOU COULD CHEAT IT

Okay so you've installed Vista on your computer and It runs fine and all that, but one part of your hardware is letting down your performance index, well this will show you how you can change it from anything between 0.1 > 9.9.

First open explorer and navigate to "C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore"
Open the most recent file in there which may be something like "2007-09-10 07.30.29.593 Assessment (Initial).WinSAT.xml"

http://i21.tinypic.com/5mgw6.jpg

Now change the numbers in there to whatever you want (between 0.1 & 9.9) you may have to take ownership of the file before you can save it.

Chris.

It could be that your memory settings are wrong in your BIOS.

Have a look at Corsairs web page and see what the timings should be,
eg CAS 4-4-4-12, then see what something along the lines of

DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD) [Manual]
CAS Latancey Time 6 [4]
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay 6 [4]
DRAM RAS# Precharge 6 [4]
Precharge Delay (tRAS) 18 [12]

say in your BIOS. This is taken from my BIOS which will probably look different to yours unless you have a Gigabyte motherboard.

In my PC's example above, the speed defaulted to 6-6-6-18 and I had to manually change it to the correct 4-4-4-12

Top score apparently is 5.9, although in the future I think higher scores are achievable when technology advances. Your scores aren't too bad but looks like your graphics card could do with replacing! :smashin:

8600 M GT (Graphics) - 5.9
Gaming Graphics - 5.4
250 GB HDD - 5.3

I'm happy with my score considering its a laptop and many of my friends scores are like 4.0 or under.

My Desktop PC is also 4.8 but its not on Vista atm so I can't say each indivdual component score.

My T7300 which is meant to be a superior processor to your T7250 gets the same 4.9.

Anyone know how these scores are calculated.

over all of 5.0 because of the graphics card not really worried because I am not really a gamer hence I only used a 8600gt when I built the computer I do think its strange that I can score a 5.3 for 3d gaming which is one of the most demanding things you can do yet only 5.0 for aero lol how much power do you need to make a window transparent

My 8600gt gets a 5.9 for gaming, it is OC'd so maybe that makes a difference.
My lappie gets a 4.8 for gaming, not too shabby, but like you only a 4.3 for Aero. Obviously the math required for Aero isn't optimised in many graphics cards.

I am currently running a home build computer. I was wondering if anybody know how I would get my score higher than what it is. My score is 5.0.

Processor: 5.9 (Intel Quad Core 6600 @ 2.4)
Memory: 5.0 (8 Gigs at 900 MHZ)
Graphics: 5.9 (PNY 512MB 8600GT OC)
Gaming Graphics: 5.6
Primary Hard Disk: 5.8 (2 IDE 250GB HDs)

When I only had 2Gb of PC6400 at stock it was 5.9, I upgraded to 4Gb, but as 5.9 is the highest I don't know what difference that made.

Seems to be something wrong with the memory settings for a 5.0 as that is a laptop memory score.
