When i start up my laptop, internet explorer starts up and tries to connect to some ieupdate page. I dont use IE, i use Firefox. Can anyone help me stop it from firing up when the pc does? Has it some thing to do with the registry?

There should be an option in your browser to set it as the default browser. You shouldnt have to touch the registry.

I am not a user of Firefox, but in AOL its under preferences, there should be an option to choose. Also if you sign onto the internet using Firefox doesnt windows ask you if you want to make it your default browser.

Thanks guys, but it's when i start the computer up. IE starts with out me doing anything. It tries to connect to a IEupdate page, as though it's in the start up plan or what ever happens. My set up with fire fox works fine, it's just annoying to se IE at start up.

Go to tools / internet options / advanced
in browsing you will see Automatically check for internet updates. make sure this is tick off. Click ok and then away you go.

Disable it and install Firefox and or Opera.
IE such a common target, code quality not great, and just to top it off it was designed to allow remote servers access to your registry. Quicker to blow a foot off now....

thanks for the replies guys. I do actually use fire fox which is why IE firing up at the start is annoying.
Where is the start up folder please?

I guess you know ieupdate is an adware download trojan, not really what you want.
Run antivirus / anti-adware progams (real ones)

run an uptodate AV scan - tell us what it finds.
remove IEupdate - check web for details don't rely on the built in windows method.
Run spybot - it will tell you, and it sounds like you need to run it anyway.
and run ad-aware.
run hi-jack this
clean up what the above tell you
if you get stuck on this (and it can be tricky..) post back here
when you think you are clean re-run all the above.
consider blocking IE from web access with your Firewall.
After all that Run msconfig.exe if you still need to - but I suspect you won't need to by then.

Thanks. Did all that and now it's stopped. I will keep those programs for future maintenance.
Thanks again.

Congrats ! It worth checking out your browser setting so that the naughty stuff has a harder chance of getting through. These are after the event measures you just took, it pays to pre-empt what you can.
If you need help to do it post here or PM me.
