I posted this in seperate vista thread, but I'm making a new thread as I don't think many people will see it in the other thread. But mods, if you feels this thread isn't neccasary, then delete it.

But, onto the subject, Not long ago, MS released RC1 to the public via the CPP. As yet, I don't think there is a way to get a new CD key, but beta 2 keys will work. So I would say only download atm, if you have a valid beta 2 key. According to MS, the CPP will be opened up for new members in the coming weeks.

Hotlink protection is enabled on those download links. You'll need to go to this page (http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc1/en/download.htm) to actually download 5600.

You can be sure that there will be problems with the download for the next few days. It's very slow for me at the moment.

It's 2.5GB for the 32-bit version, and 3.6GB for the 64-bit!

2.5 GB is a huge improvement over previous builds, I remember one 32-bit build being 3.x GB. One x64 build even required a DVD9! crazy.

Can it be used as a clean install? I've downloaded the beta 2 but never got round to installing it or do I have to install beta 2 then upgrade?

Cheers.

Clean install is OK.

My Beta 2 key doesnt work with this, bum :thumbsdow

Will try installing 5536 then upgrading, that might work.

Think I might have typed it in wrong. Works OK on 5536 - my first Vista install

Not sure how many of you are dual booting with Vista, but if you are I'd highly suggest checking out a program called Vista Boot Pro (http://www.pro-networks.org/vistabootpro/), it's basically a GUI frontend for the BCDEDIT command line program in Vista. Much easier to use.

Anyone know when to expect the next build of vista?

This is the Vista Ultimate Pre-release beta, I do not see why you are waiting for the next build as I have found this to be completely stable. The Media Center is a dream, and all my hardware was installed correctly and assigned to the correct driver without any driver cd coming close the the DVD tray. Hopefully a sign of things to come with this up to date O/s.

The only niggle I have with this build is when assigning a download folder for an anonymous client (will withdraw name for forum rules), the folder is not present in the explorer, however when searching the files and path are found. With previous builds I had other path errors. Aside from this a great O/s, especially running core 2 duo.

reason i'm asking about the next build is all the problems i'm having with the RC1 release not to mention transcode360 should work fine in the next build

see all my problems here http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=388848&page=3

Stupid simple question time...

I have XP Pro.....so I gather what is being discussed here is the next Microsoft Operating System release.

Ok, if Media Center Edition 2005 is a media-centric version of XP, why is everyone seemingly keen to download this (standard?) Vista O/S release (as opposed to presumably what most on here would want......a Vista MCE variant?)

Or have I missed the point...does this download give the option of installing a lightweight MCE type enviroment?

I'm looking to build an HTPC but want the user interface presented to my missus to be as missus friendly as possible (no pesky options to confuse her female brain  )

Vista is an MCE version.
With vista there will not be a seperate MCE version.
The Media centre will be build into the home premium and ultimate versions of vista. With Home premium the one the majority of people will probably buy.

If you are a technet or connect beta tester, I think you choose which version of RC1 (or other beta) you want, but with the public release, the key given out in the CPP is an ultimate key, and so the version installed will be ultimate

Ok thanks....so after installing will it have a PC-esque feel (ie desktop, "start" button) or can it be configured just to have a simple MCE-esque look/feel?

Started my download off.....32hours!...just as well this is a big company, else the download time would be massive

Is it true the WAIK and BDD 2007 tools won't work on this new 5600 build? I really wanted to play with image-based deployment!
