Foobar 0.93 sound quality problem

Hi,

I have a strange issue with foobar if anyone has any ideas?

I have been using foobar 0.83 with no problems for over a year.

I have installed the latest 0.93, but when i play a track the quality is far worse and very hissy. If i switch back to 0.83 the hiss has gone and the sound quality is back.

I have reinsatlled the two versions many times and the results are always the same.

I am feeding a Tag AV32 via the digital output of an RME 96/8 card.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks

Richard

Re: Foobar 0.93 sound quality problem

I'm using 0.93 and it's always sounded fine. You may want to look at the foobar forums http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/...act=SF&s=&f=28

I've had a quick look at there is mention of DSP components still enabled from 0.83, or change the output from waveout to directsound. Check the equalizer settings too.

Re: Foobar 0.93 sound quality problem

Thanks for that, i have just checked that forum.

Seems a couple of other people are having a similar problem too so i have added my probelm on there.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/...howtopic=47720

One mentions that after he added the kernal streaming his problem went away, i have never used that as my RME card does not need it. I will give it a go though to see if it cures it.

Re: Foobar 0.93 sound quality problem

Just in case anyone has the same problem i have got a soloution.

I am only surmising the following:

Foobar must have changed the way it maps the sound.

On 0.83 the sound is perfect without plugins because as i am aware the RME drivers by pass the standard windows audio drivers and Kmixer. So ASIO is not needed.

On 0.94 with no plugins the sound is very bad because the sound is being sent through the microsoft sound mapper (i dont really understand this as with the RME drivers it should make no difference after what i have read on the forums here). To solve the problem i added the foobar ASIO plugin which then gave as good sound as the original 0.83.

So happy with the sound on the latest foobar now, but I dont understand why i would need to use the ASIO plugin with an RME card.

Can anyone shed anymore light on this?

Thanks

Richard
