I have an Axim, and it's just like any other Windows based PDA. It's dead easy to add GPS maps. What type of maps do you want? Are you looking for routing maps for road (TomTom etc) or off-road, topographic maps (OS 50k scale, MemoryMap, Anquet etc.)? The Axim has CF and SDIO sockets as well as BlueTooth so you can use pretty much any GPS receiver on the market.

For music, movies etc the Axim comes with Windows Media Player. It's a reasonable MP3 player, not too bad at movies if you are prepared to spend the time to rescale them to the size of the screen (IIRC a 2hr movie rescaled to 320x240 takes in the region of 300MB). You can buy many others if WMP isn't adequate.
Windows ActiveSync will synchronize your calendar, contacts and emails. It will also synchronize files/folders if you want.

Put a GPRS card in it and it becomes a smart phone...
