If the rumour mongers are to be believed Luke & Leia are hidden from their father in different locations to protect them both. I presume Anakin Skywalker is unaware of their existence. So what does Owen and Beru Lars do? They let Luke go by the name of Skywalker! How stupid is that if they are trying to protect him from Vader and the Emporer?

The way I remember is that Vader always knew he had a child, hejust didn't know about Leia, which suggests, that the Anakin->Vader transformation happens during the pregnancy.
In Episode VI Vader shouts "Twins!" in surprise and triumph when he reads Luke's feelings.
Nope!
In Ep VI Obi Wan Kenobi says "You were both hidden from your father when you were born, if the Emporer knew that Anakin had ANY offspring they could be a threat to him"
Therefore Anakin can't have known of Luke's existence until events between Ep IV & V which were never filmed. Although wether this is revealed in one of the novels I wouldn't know.

Well, there was nothing in the Star Wars novel. Unlike SW the ESB novel was a straight adaptation of the film - not written by GL. Nothing there either.

Vader doesn't shout twins, he says "A Sister"
Then says something about Obiwan being right to conceal her existence
Vader says
"Your feelings are strong for them, especially....................sister! so, you have a twin sister. Your feelings have betrayed her too. Obi wan was wise to hide her from me, now his failure is complete, if you will not turn to the dark side then perhaps she will." Went something like that if I remember correctly!!
Then Luke goes into one etc etc

Theres nothing worse than being smug and coming up with a correct quote, apart from someone else being even smugger and coming up with an even more correct quote!

Plus,when Obi gives Luke his lightsaber,he say "Your father wanted you to have this when you old enough".
The statement "Your father wanted you have this....." is probably a little white lie. I think Obi Wan comes into possession of Anakin's lightsabre in less than amicable circumstances.
