View Full Version : Crank, mindless fun?

anyone seen the trailers for the film 'Crank'? it looks completely mindless fun!

jason statham plays 'chev chelios' (yeah, you read that right), a hitman who gets crossed by some chinese gangsters and injected with a drug which will slow down his body until he dies. the only way to stay alive is to have massive rushes of adrenaline. cue some kerrazy stunts and you have what could be the fun film of the year.

without spoiling it (it's in the trailer on xboxlive) he's having a conversation with a friend on the phone (whilst driving his car through a mall being chased by the cops) and complaining he feels like he's 'slowing down', smashes through a few objects and then says he feels better.... after a moment he spins the car and flips it over an escalator, it lands ON the escalator and goes up it on it's side. the trailer ends here but i assume the car rights itself a floor up and carries on!

there's high def trailers on xbox live (US)

trailer here too:

it looks awesome.

"Verdict
A Saw for the action crowd, this is an intense, stripped-down ride that goes places you’d never expect. Edgy and outrageous, it should get the fearless Statham some deserved attention."

Looks very good.

It was OK, some good action, some over egged camera work, felt long for 80 minutes. Some stuff I've never seen in a film before.

Not a bad film but I can think of a few ways in which it could have been better. For example, it would have been more exciting if he actually was a programmer who witnessed a murder or something (could probably think of something less clichéd). I think it would have made it more gripping if he had no idea what he was doing because as it is, he looked a little too 'in control' and undefeatable given the urgency of the situation.

Overall, it was pretty much what I expected from 'Speed in a Person' and is probably worth a watch if you want some non-stop action. As a similarly paced film I found 'Ong-Bak' better though.

6/10

I went to see it this afternoon and to be quite honest I had a big grin on my face for the entire movie - Great fun and as an added bonus we have the delectable Amy Smart as the love interest (she played Sexy Coma Wife in scrubs)

Very silly, very fun, completly mindless but works on so many (mostly violent) levels.

And if of course anyones having trouble convincing their girlfriends/wives to go and see it tell then they get to see rather large portions of Jason Stathams body. (the guys can just think about the portions of Amy Smart that are on display instead:devil: )

And the joke about Al Queida was hilarious.

Am I the only one who thinks the film would have been a lot more fun if he had to keep his heart rate *below* a certain level? You could have so much more tension and intensity if he had to concentrate on keeping cool and relaxed all the time, no matte how tense the situation. Of course, it would have probably not been as "macho".

Hmmm.... maybe they'll make the sequel like that...

Saw this last night, really enjoyed it.

Had a silly grin on my face most of the way through, the tonuge in cheek factor was just about right as my pal who hated both Transporter films really liked it.

Matter of interest when was the last time we had a good 18 rated action film like this in the cinema, i'm having trouble thinking of one?

HAve to agree, we need more good 18 rated action movies like the old days. None of this pandering to the blooming kids of 13 years old. I mean, what do they know about a good shoot out and bone breaking action anyway!!!!!!

I loved this movie, I really ,really did, trouble is, cant see there being a sequel anytime soon!

Totally agree that the film companies need to stop pandering to the prepubescent demographic.

Seems as though I'm the only one that thought Crank was absolute tripe then.

I went to see this on the strength of the trailer. Unfortunately I thought it was very poor. The 'controversial' scene with his girlfriend really was lame.

Agree with you on all counts, took my wife and even she enjoyed it, as long as you turn off your brain, take it for what it is and enjoy the fairly healthy portion of comedy that runs throughout the film it is well worth your cinema entry money :smashin:

Just noticed this extra on the Region 1 version of Crank (http://www13.cd-wow.com/detail_results_2.php?product_code=1853306)

"An audio option that allows viewers to listen to the film in a "family-friendly" audio with extreme language removed" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Would you really want to watch this film with all the family - I can just imagine sitting round the telly with the kids asking why that man had his hand cut off or why those two people were shedding clothes at an alarming rate in the middle of the street, but its ok because the extreme language is removed  :rotfl:

I watched this last night and what a bizzare film it was. I certainly didn't expect it be like that. I was expecting it to be like Transporter. Unusual is the word i would decribe it.

There was some very funny and memorable moments in it though. But not sure if i liked it or not !

I'll have to watch it a few more times to be sure, which must mean it's a good then. :smashin:

definitely a good bit of maiming fun...heh.....quite happy to watch low brain level films if they are 18 rated and put in some funny sick stuff...

picture quality was something i was well impressed by.....have bought a few films lately that should have ultimate level quality picture and actually had quite poor moments in them.....but this was solid all the way through!

sound quality wasnt bad either, good use of music

loved the Al-Queida (scuse sp) gag...heh.....loved her too, damn that womans got an ability to play the cute bewildered type.....yum....

in fact tbh i enjoyed it in some parts a lot more than the Transporter films....in other ways i enjoyed those more.....

very short tho.....1hr 20m approx i think........watched Date Movie after which was even shorter!

Watched Crank last night, it was okay, I thought that it would have been better.

The thing is, I rented the movie and thought that for the type of movie it is the soundtrack lacked badly in quite a few places.

Popped the disc into the computer and found that the disc is only a single layer disc.

Is this a sign of companies already starting to cut back on the quality on DVD discs as they try to improve the market for HD DVD.

i rented it too from Blockbuster.....was only 1hr 20 mins long.....cant remember what extras were on there, dunno if it was single or dual layer tho....cant tell on my Denon 3910, dont normally notice a pause due to the buffer.....

oh, the PQ was top notch in my opinion........much better than a lot of films i've seen on DVD...

sound quality was pretty reasonable too...

perhaps there are two versions floating around for rental?

I rented from Xtra Vision, a chain owned by Blockbuster. Probably the same disc.

Its not that it was bad, I just thought that there could have been more. Once I noticed it was a single layer, I thought that they could have upped the bitrate of the picture.

The picture still looks fine though.

I think that a single layered disk at best quality will hold 65mins of video, so if the film is 80mins long, then its not far off.

Surely looking at the disc would have told you if it was single or dual layer?

With dual layer discs looking gold in colour, and single layer discs looking silver in colour.

Okay, it might have been a dual layer disc, but the spaced used on the disc was between 4GB-4.5GB.

I've never seen a sigle layer disc hold any more than 4.5GB. The xtra 200+mb's is used in the programing of the disc and does not releate to the finish quality of the flim.

Got the R1 disc at the weekend. Enjoyed it, but not as much as I thought. The 'Cranked Out Mode', is alright,(at least it's on there, unlike the naff R2 disc), but I think I'd have prefered standalone commentary, interviews, etc. Can't please some people, eh? The Family Audio mode is also a hoot, and reminds me of the old ITV dubs of Robocop, etc. The slipcase, and actual artwork are both the same, and both give the aspect ratio incorrectly as 2.35:1, when it's 1.78:1,(approx).

Just finished watching the R1 of this. R1 disc is definately a DVD9, but still the movie only takes up about 3.5 gigs. The 'Cranked Out Mode' uses another 3.5 gigs. Even so I thought it was a good transfer.

Generally found it mindless fun and quite entertaining. Think I'll have to watch again, esp the last half hour as I was struggling a little (tired eyes).

Yeah 3.5 GB sounds about right for the size of the movie on the R2 disc. It only has a trailer for an extra and the DD 5.1 soundtrack would have only been between 500-700mb's.

I think that this badly sucks as they was so much more that could have been done with the disc. It could have had a full bitrate DTS soundtrack, a super high quality picture bitrate (twice what it probably has ) or even a load of extras.

It's still okay, but a waste of space. I thought that's what DVD's where for, super quality.

Just incase anyone might be interested.

The movie is layed out on the disc as shown in this picture.

The main movie using 3755MB in total+ Menu trailer ect.

Eh, that doesn't even make sense! Oh well, I suppose the only way they were going to have another one is by introducing a 'twin brother'. :god:

Watched this again for the second time last night. Introduced a friend to the film - the perfect accompaniment to our guy's night of take away and cold beer.

Check you brain at the door, sit back, for once do not judge too highly and go along for the ride. It's totally ridiculous and OTT and all the better for it.

Watching on a 40" HDTV upscaled to 1080p on a PS3 the DVD transfer looks amazing for SD material.

This is fast becoming one of my favourite 'no-brain' films.

I have the German 2-Disc edition. The movie is on Disc 1 and Crank'd Out Mode and other extras are on Disc 2. Dunno about disc space and all that stuff but the picture is incredible for an SD disc.

Oh, and it comes in a really cool steelbook box, with a holographic Jason Statham on the front cover!

Looks like a sequel is coming out! From filmwad:

Several months ago Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor announced that they were going to be writing and directing a sequel to their energetic action flick Crank. People kind of chuckled and said, "Okay. Whatever guys. It can come out the weekend after Reservoir Dogs 2." But somehow it's really going through. We learned via Cinematical that Neveldine did an interview with Empire in which he spilled some details. Firstly, the film will be a true sequel rather than a prequel. There will be no twin brother to replace Statham's deceased Chev Chelios character (as we had previously heard). The first film was not a dream sequence and neither is this. In Mr. Neveldine's words:

We came up with an idea, we wrote the script, and after the studio read it they couldn't believe that we pulled it off. And of course, the best test was giving it to Jason and Jason turned down every other project so he could do this, start this in the spring of next year. He was so excited, he couldn't believe it!

You have to go twice as hard. So that's what we're going to do. If we're going to live up to the first one with the sequel – we're taking it WAY past the point of the first one.

Spoiler alert for Crank 2 (and Crank actually) , but this sounds very likely to be the get out of jail free card...

I don’t know if this is true, but it is rumored that when he was in the taxi and that jamaican guy gave him that “haitian ****” that is “strong ****” as he says, and Chev begins tripping out immediately… well, rumor has it that everything after he woke up from that, was a hallucination.

Well I found this movie sooooo bad, especially the way women were treated, but I guess I'm mad as I'm replying to this thread. Anyway in this movie, there was a common theme of zombies, such as he got hurt but he can't feel the pain, a black guy gave him some voodoo magical stuff. So I believe in the sequel he will just raise up from the floor and just walk, bleeding blood. Got back to me if I'm wrong.
