VanDamme Blue Series Loudspeaker cable...

Lots of AVForums members are always enquiring about a well manufactured relatively affordable loudspeaker cable and this is the one that many folk have found to offer the best mix of quality vs. cost.

The industry standard VanDamme range of Blue Series Two core speaker cables feature fine stranded conductors and utilise the latest PVC composite jacket materials to provide the highest level of flexibility married with totally efficient signal transmission.

This range of cables is ideal for HiFi 'Stereo' and Home Theatre 'Multi channel' installations.

VanDamme use a higher purity oxygen free copper for the conductors which improves the ‘solderability’ and conductivity of the conductor resulting in faithful and transparent signal reproduction.

The overall jacket material is a neoprene heavy duty PVC composite that has an almost rubberised quality. This jacket is high pressure extruded over the 2 twisted inner conductors to create a robust, extremely flexible speaker cable.

• Three conductor sizes to suit your budget and application.

• Ultra pure oxygen free copper conductors for high efficiency signal transmission

• Composite jacket material for excellent flexibility

Hello Mission

Depending on the length of cable your running - the 2x1.5mm or 2x2.5mm will be ideal; personally I'd use the 2x2.5mm even on a short run.

Hi Joe,

Can this cable be painted well/easily (just need last couple of metres white)?

Also, can you beat other sites? Clearly AV have much cheaper prices across the board, especially when factoring in free delivery (Special Delivery or next day courier) for orders over £45. I can get 25m of 2.5mm2 for £45, but it would be £60 with the powerbuy. I will need this, maybe a bit more depending on what you can do.

Cheers,
Dingwall.

Hello dingwall

I have seen the cable being painted - though I guess you have to be aware of what's in the paint in case it attacks the neoprene outer layer of the cable.

Another option is to put the cable in a white spiral sleeve - a couple of meters of sleeve is relatively inexpensive.

In terms of pricing I'll have a look at it - though I can't see where these guys are making any money; especially so with the FREE delivery on orders over 45.00 GBP.

Joe, I can't wait around any longer so have obviously ordered mine from Clearly AV. Seeing the price of 2.5mm2 reels is £1.12/m inc VAT and delivery at some shops, even they are making a comfortable profit by my calculation.

Joe Fernand

Hello dingwall

Your reel price excludes the Inwards delivery costs plus suitable packaging material and delivery charges to send the cables back out again; the Free shipping offer simply doesn't stack up on my calculator.

I'll leave our prices as advertised and see how it goes.

Hi Joe,

Numpty alert; apologies in advance.

I'm doing up my attic and making into a cinema - the flooring arived today but I need to sort out my cabling before I lay it.

Not got my home cinema yet but will probably be getting this package;

http://www.creative-audio.co.uk/HCS_ONK674_AENEO.htm

Which wiring thickness would you recommend?

Do these cables have any fixings / plugs or is it wire only? Do they need any?

What wire do you suggest for a subwoofer.

Sorry for a list of questions.

PS Where do babies come from?

Joe Fernand
02-04-2007, 6:38 PM
Hello NORTHERN MONKEY

01. The 2x2.5mm cable will cover pretty much any Amplifier/Loudspeaker package you are likely to be installing.

02. Connectors are optional - some folk use them to make connecting/reconnecting the system more straightforward. They certainly make for an easier life when your working on the back plate of your average AV Receiver which usually has very tightly spaced input/output sockets.

Its usually simpler to lay the cables first and add the connectors (4mm Banana plugs) later - most are a simple 'screw on' design.

03. VanDamme have a very good quality screened audio cable that can be made to length, pre terminated with RCA plugs for use with your AV Receiver and Sub.

04. Babies - from the 'very expensive to maintain' shop!

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the cable, arrived last saturday as promised, the quality is fantastic and a marked improvement over my old QED cable.

I now need to cable up the rest of my 5.1 setup so I need 0.75m of the 2.5mm terminated with Airlocs on both ends for the center. And I was wondering if you sell anything suitable for running under carpets for the rears? Judging by how chunky the outer jacket of the 2.5mm cable is I think the 1.5mm will also be to big. Any ideas?

Hey Joe,

I have been reading through some of the threads about speaker cables and notice that you give out some great advice, just wondering if you can throw some my way please.

I'm looking to upgrade my home cinema system to a Sony STRDA1200ES reciever and Q Acoustics 1010 5.1 Speaker package, could you advise me on which speaker cable is best to use considering i will probably need about 30m and dont want to spend over £100 on it. And what connections will i need on both ends.

Also could you tell me what the total thickness of the cable is, as i have just layed new flooring and will be laying the cable in the gap i've left round the skirting board which will be covered by the beading.

Thank you very much and sorry about the lame questions.

Hi,
I have an Arcam AVR 350 amp with PMC FB1+ floorstanding fronts, GB1+ rears & TB2 Centre.
I currently have the fronts biamped and centre biwired with QED Bronze speaker cable.

What would you recommend, quality wise, for this purpose? One run of VD Black (biwire) cable or 2 runs of Blue?
Would there be any perceptible difference between QED and VD Blue or VD Black with my kit?

Thanks
David

Hello BAD Dave

I've used the Black Series 4x2.5mm with a few pairs of the PMC FB1+ and no complaints so far - personally I haven't tried a shoot out between two runs of 2x2.5mm Blue Series vs. one run of the 4x2.5mm Black Series.

VanDamme vs. QED is a Trick question - if I go one way I get slaughtered by the 'speaker cables cant make a difference brigade' and if I go the other way I get slaughtered by the folk who say 'it made a positive difference to my system' :)

Hello Joe,

Have 2x MA RS6 floorstanders arriving very soon along with an an Onkyo 805 amp/receiver but no cable as yet, I would need 2 x 2m terminated runs of whatever you think would be best, the speakers can be bi-wired & the amp can bi-amp so would be interested in being able to do this, any recommendations?

Looking at a cable upgrade for my fronts and centre speaker and the VanDamme looks interesting. I note from your web site that you offer the blue 4mm and 6mm cable. As the lengths are shortish the cost difference is not important, I am just looking for the best performance. Would also like to have one end of each cable professionally terminated with banana plugs - can you do that?

Can you quote on:

2x 3m lengths
1x 1m length

Whats your opinion on 4mm or 6mm? Note want something that will cope with a speaker and Amp upgrade. New Amp is likely to be a Yamaha DSP-Z9.

Thanks.

Hello happhhitachi

Cant see you having to go to the 6mm cable - I find the 2x2.5mm is sufficient for most systems so 4mm ought to be ideal!

We have various Screw, Solder and Crimp on termination options.

I'll fire over a PM this AM.

Hello Joe,

I'm going to be powering a pair of Dali Ikon On-Walls from a Denon AVC-A10SE for use as rear centre surrounds. Need cables for 2 speakers, single runs to each and 12m in length each.

My current side surrounds (also Dali Ikon On-Walls) are connected with QED Silver Anniv. 7m runs each. Which of your cables would you recommend on a cost benefit basis so that the sound is not tooo different?

Can you crimp on spade terminations?

Let me know how much including postage to London.

Cheers, Will

One more question Joe, sorry to trouble you with it!

My Dali On-Walls litterally hang on the wall. This means that the speaker cable dangles beneath them for a few feet before hitting the floor and running around the room. On my current set I have QED Silver Anniv cable and being almost white in colour they really don't notice that much. I note that your cables are black in colour.

So here's the question; Can I splice about 5 feet of QED silver anniv onto the end of your cables, solder and shrink wrap the contact point and effectively improve the aesthetic look of them against the wall? Will this work? I have several meters of spare QED Silver Anniversary you see.

Be interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

Will

Hello willharris10

You can join two 'the same' or 'different' cables - though the purist will tell you its best avoided.

If you are to use a surface mounted cable then possibly a low profile conduit to conceal the cable would be a much neater option - see http://www.d-line.co.uk/

Crimp on 4mm Plugs or Spades is possible.

10-09-2007, 8:55 AM
One other thing. I don't suppose your cable comes in a white sleeve instead of black or blue does it? If not don't worry but if it does, then that would be preferable for those small parts where it's on show until the D-lines are bought.

willharris10
10-09-2007, 9:05 AM
Ok, I may be getting myself confussed here. I need 24m in total of 2 core cable, that's standard speaker cable. I'm sure you knew that anyway, but I'm getting paranoid about confussing you! D'Oh.

Joe Fernand
10-09-2007, 9:19 AM
Hello willharris10

The cable is only available in a blue outer.

The 2x2.5mm cable has two bundles of inner copper conductors (for + and - between your Amp and Speaker terminals) so yes you only require a total length of 24m if you have two 12m runs to cater for.

I'll PM details this AM.

Hi Jo,

What would be the best from the following 3 for biamping an avr300 to monitor audio rs6?

3m lengths terminated with ???
1) 4 of 2*6mm blue
2) 4 of 2*4mm blue or
3) 2 of 4*4mm black?

I will be also needing cable for rears (2*2.5mm blue) - 2 lengths of 8 metres each, terminated with ???

Could you please replace the ??? with the different types of bananas you do:
ie separate prices for:
1) basic screw on
2) screw to silver
3) crimp on airlocs

(24 bananas in total)

What would be your best price on this lot and how long would this order take to arrive Joe? I'm in Yeading, Middlesex.

I am wanting to purchase enough cables for my new system the room is only small its for a bedroom.

the receiver i'm using is the Onkyo 605 and my sound system is Acoustic Energy Aego T System 5.1

Will this cable be sutible and how much do you think i need.

For the rear speakers i would say 4m for both speakers is enough for the front i will say i need 2 meters for both speakers the center speaker i will require about 1m.

Im not sure what plugs i will need on either and of the cable any advice?

Hello bailey1987

The 2x2.5mm will be ideal.

Grab your tape measure and meaures each cable run - ensure you leave some slack.

4mm plugs for the the AV Receiver - not sure about your Loudspeakers; can you PM a link to a user manual.

Hi Joe.

I've checked the search option and have browsed other posts but nothing quite clarifies what i need to know.
I am brand new to home cinema and have just bought an Onkyo 605 to accompany my 'arriving' Kef 3005SE's. As i've got to wait for the speakers i thought i'd get some new cable and lay it all in preparation to get the most out of my new setup. I know absolutely nothing about speaker / subwoofer cable other than getting good stuff is well advised.

My question is what should i lean towards (ie QED Silver Ann. XT) and can someone explain what connections i will need to go into my sub / speakers / amp. I dont have a very big lounge so price aint really a problem. Just needs to complement my mid-range setup .

I've just been advised on getting banana plugs for my setup so I now know what these are if that makes your response quicker :smashin:

Hello mikeclarke007

Cable - the VanDamme Blue Series 2x1.5mm or 2x2.5mm will be ideal for your set up. I'd go with the 2x2.5mm myself.

Loudspeaker Cable Termination - your AV Receiver and Loudspeakers can take Bare Wire, 4mm plugs or Spades.

I'd definitely go with 4mm at the AV Amp as it makes life a lot easier when connecting up the cables.

If your wall mounting the Speakers I'd be tempted to go with Bare wire or Spades.

Sub - as its an active Sub you send it a line level signal over a screened RCA to RCA audio cable. VanDamme have an ideal cable - let me know the cable length required.

Thanks for the reply Joe. I will stress that i'm a complete n00b with the terminology so a few of those ideas went straight over my head.

- I'm gonna go with the 2x2.5mm but what is this a measurement of exactly and how is it more beneficial over 2x1.5mm?
- You've advised me on the 4mm plugs. Are these the banana plugs?
- Each of the 4 surround 'eggs' will be on its own Kef stands so should i get the 4mm plugs at either end of the cable (terminated)?
- The final comment about the sub made me dizzy :)

Other than cost what makes this Van Damme cable any better than QED Silver Anniversary XT?

Thank you again for your patience.

Hello mikeclark007

Just spent the afternoon first fixing a Pioneer (PDP-508XD), Onkyo (TX-SR857) and KEF (KHT-3005) system so have the answers now!!!

2x2.5mm is basically a 'thicker' version of the 2x1.5mm cable - the more copper in the cable the longer you can run the signal without signal drop off.

The KHT-3005 floor stands will take the 2x1.5mm cable not the 2x2.5mm cable.

Banana Plugs = 4mm plugs and I'd use them at the AV Receiver end of the cable and stick with bare wire at the Loudspeakers.

For the Sub you simply require a long RCA to RCA audio cable.

If you let me know required cable lengths (inc Sub cable) I can work you out a total cost.

Joe

mikeclark007
02-11-2007, 4:33 PM
Joe,

Based on your info i'm gonna need the following for the speakers (with 4mm banana plugs going to the onkyo and bare at the other end:

- 2x1.5mm (1.0m) (Centre)
- 2x1.5mm (2.0m) (Front L)
- 2x1.5mm (2.0m) (Front R)
- 2x1.5mm (7.0m) (Rear R)
- 2.1.5mm (11.0m) (Rear L)

Sub cable length req'd - 3.5m

Will it matter that the cable lengths for the rear speakers have a bit of variation in length?

Cheers

Hi Joe,

Can you advise on the correct termination I require for the following system.

Speakers are B&W M1 - I think that these provide a termination block (like a 3-pin plug) on the stand, wall mounts, so I presume banana plugs or spades unsuitable, unsure what pre tinned is.

Will be using the M1 stands - is there a max. area/width/gauge wire I can use?

The receiver I will use will probably be Sony STR-DG910 or Cambridge 340R V3 - presume 4mm plugs are best & suitable for the 5 speakers for receiver termination, yeah?

Can you advise how much excess safe to be left (e.g. if you coil up the last 1m of a 5m run, can this cause problems?)

For pricing, here is what I believe I will need, probably venture for the 2*1.5mm, for budget reasons.

front left & front right requires 2.5m each
centre requires 1.0m
Rear left 8m.
Rear right 10m

May require sub cable, separate price for 5m (again, any issues if I coil, as one position will be ~2m, other ~5m, so depending on position, may have to coil 3m)

I'm based on Dublin - please factor this for poostage.

Cheers.

I'm after 2 x 2.5m lengths, terminated at one end with banana plugs and the other end unterminated.

The cable needs to be fed through AG wallflower stands with an opening of 9mm at one end. Will the 2x2.5mm cable fit or is it best to go with the 1.5mm?

Hi there,

I was looking for the following:
3 X 5m (fronts/center)
2 X 10m (rear)

I have the KEF 2005.2 and wondered what the best size for the setup would be?

Also the fronts and center are at different lengths but have been told in the past to keep them the same... is this true or an attempt to sell more?

If you could price-up the above with with/without banana plugs at one end (not sure what best for the other).

Cheers,

Hello harrissr

The 2x2.5mm or 2x1.5mm work fine with your KEF's - I tend to favour the 2x2.5mm; old habits die hard!

With HiFi its best to stick to same cable lengths in a high resolution system - for AV I cut the cables to the required lengths and let the AV Receiver/Processor sort out delays and timings.

A PM is on its way!

Hi Joe,

could you advise me please. I'm looking for a 1m pair of cables to bi-wire my speakers but from a single amp binding post - I have a pair of NuForce Ref 9's. What is the best way to do this? Can you crimp two runs of cable in a single banana/spade connector or is it better to go for one spade and one banana?

Also, will I see much of a difference between using the Black Series Bi-Wire or two runs of the Blue Series 4mm cables? Or are they effectively the same multicore cable in a 2 channel and 4 channel grouping?

Thanks.

Joe Fernand
28-11-2007, 10:00 AM
Hello sjalloq

It is possible to 'twin' two of the 2.5mm bundles into a single 4mm plug - the QED Airloc work well if you want a Crimp on connection.

If you want to use the 4mm cable then you will need to consider 1 x Spade + 1 x 4mm.

The physical and electrical properties of the conductors used in the Blue and Black Series are very similar; its the jacket construction that differs with the Black series being slightly stiffer.

I am looking for 3 cables-to connect 2 Morduant Short 906i's and a Morduant Short 905i centre speaker to a Harman Kardon AVR340 Amp. I would like them terminated if possible, and all about 2m long? What kind of price (delivered) would I be looking at?

Will the 2x 2.5 cable fit nicely in my 16x8mm trunking? I assume it will but I have no idea how thick the outer casing is.

I take it the 2x2.5 will be ok for 10-15m runs to my side/rear Monitor Audio silver and gold series surround speakers or should I be considering the thicker one?

Hi Joe,

I spoke to you last week by phone and you gave me some excellent advice about mounting my new LCD tv so thanks again for that!

I have purchased the Tannoy SFX 5.1 speaker package to go with my new Onkyo 605 and am thinking that I should really upgrade the 25m of cable that comes with the Tannoys (even although my budget is spiralling out of control much to the missus' disgust! :god:)

Could you advise if you think there would be a noticeable difference with this cable and if so what size would I need? Due to the constraints of the room I will have to run the cable for the rear speakers a fair length so in total I think I'd require 38m. Looking to install everything this weekend so could you provide a quote along with your opinions.

Thanks again
Ian

Joe Fernand
17-01-2008, 10:20 AM
Hello Urkit

If the 'supplied' cable is very thin its definitely worth considering a different cable.

If the 'supplied' cable is of a decent cross section then I wouldn't expect any great 'gains' in swapping to another cable.

Not a problem delivering 38m of cable for this weekend if required.

Best regards

Joe

Hi Joe,

Not sure what the cable is like as I wont pick up speakers till tomorrow.

I think that there is only 25m supplied so wouldn't be enough anyway. Is it a bad idea to mix up speaker cable types in an install? i.e. Using the 25m supplied for the front speakers and one of the rears and buying another type of cable to wire the remaining rear speaker?

Thanks

Joe Fernand
17-01-2008, 1:09 PM

Cant see you having a problem mixing cable types - personally I'd be tempted to use one cable type for the front three and the other cable type for the surrounds!

Hello Joe,

Thanks for the pm regarding prices.

I have a set of Jamo A102's that will be connected to a Onkyo 605. Will i need 2.5mm cable for the 5 speakers, or will it make any difference if i run 2 x 15 metre 1.5mm cable to the rears, and use 2.5mm for the fronts?

Hello all

urkit - bit of as dilemma. I know plenty of folk wouldn't give having a mix of cable types a second thought whilst other folk may not sleep at night worrying about it; depends what Anorak level your at :)

aspers - if you were running 'full' range loudspeakers on a 15m run I'd say go with the 2x2.5mm! As its 'Satellites' on Surround duty I'd suggest you'll be fine with the 2x1.5mm.

xxnoelziexx - I'll PM you contact details.

Are there any kiwis on this thread who can tell me if: a) There's any suppliers of VanDamme cable in New Zealand or b) If local suppliers like Dick Smith have an equivalent product?

Failing that, is there a way of testing cable?

Cheers :-)

Joe Fernand
21-01-2008, 12:07 PM
Hello all

jg213 - the Blue Series 2x2.5mm or 2x1.5mm will both work well in your system - the thinner cable will be easier to conceal if your not able to bury it in your wall.

portyporty - no VanDamme Distributor in NZ. Easy enough to ship - though shipping costs may be a factor.

Thanks Joe. Sounds like I might have to rely on cables from our local hobby store, Dick Smith. (http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront)

So, is there a way to test cables to reveal their.....well, actually, I don't know what needs to be revealed, being a computer guy and not an electronics boffin.

What needs measuring? Resistance? Conductivity? Effectiveness of shielding? Purity of core? (Wow, this sounds almost like I know what I'm talking about, LOL!)

Joe Fernand
22-01-2008, 8:10 AM
Hello all

cartwrin - we have Interconnects for pretty much any connection you can think of; drop me a PM with your wish list.

portyporty - decent quality copper for the conductors, a flexible outer jacket if you have to go around bends and a decent cross sectional area to the conductors is what to look out for. 2x2.5mm is a good 'cover all' cable size.

Hello danmc_82

'Welded' - were not building ships :)

Where were assembling cables with Plugs (4mm or Spades) we usually offer Screw on (non branded, Gold plated, twin screws) or Crimp on (QED Airloc).

If you want Solder on plugs we can and do supply them - though I tend to supply those as a DIY project.

Will try to get pics up today.

Hi Joe, ive recently got some 4.0mm blue quite cheap (Clearance). They only had 9m which isnt enough for me to use. Im going to be using wall plates for my front speakers. What do you think to me using 2.5mm cable in the wall up to the wall plates and then having the 4.0mm running from the wall plates to the speakers. Or do you think I should have 4.0mm all the way.

Also is 1.5mm good enough for surround speakers?

Joe Fernand
12-02-2008, 12:57 PM
Hello danmc 82

If you believe there will be a benefit in your system by using 2x4.0mm vs. using 2x2.5mm then you ought to use 2x4.0mm all the way.

In a Multi Channel Movie system the Surrounds tend to get less of a work out than the Fronts and many folk do use a thinner cable - where you have 2x4.0mm on the Fronts I would have thought 2x2.5mm would be a better option for the Surrounds.

In a Multi Channel Music system there is an argument for keeping the same cable on the Fronts and Surrounds.
