With the arrival of the new formats just around the corner(UK anyway) has anyone stopped buying the new release DVD's in anticipation of HD-DVD or Blueray.

I'm still buying DVDs and still plan to for a very long time. I might buy the odd boxset in HD-DVD/BD depending on the film like LOTR or Matrix or Star Wars (which I still haven't got a complete boxset)

Only got my 32" CRT last year so not going to be replacing that with an HD set for along time so will be getting DVD's for the foreseeable future.

The prices are around the price of normal dvds, discs can start as little as 11.99.

Er, that's what I mean by plummet.
Being a tightwad, I don't buy the latest, I wait a few months till the price drops by 60% or more.
I shall continue to do the same for at least a couple of years, or until the HD player prices fall to about 10% of what they are now.
The manufacturers only rarely make whopping piles of profit out of me

I won't be going for HD for a very long time at least until prices of software & especially hardware has dropped substantially...plus the format wars over...I also want to be able to play my current DVDs on the same player(capable of multiregion DVDs & HD material).
so I guess I'll be buying DVDs for quite a few years yet.

Its practically the same price as normal dvd already , unless you want a 20quid el cheapo player from tescos in which case you probably won't be bothered by the picture improvement anyway.

Yes (to an extent), also now getting use to HD quality on Sky so SD DVD quality just don't cut it for me anymore.

The industry has probably lost nearly a grand from my pocket alone due to the lack of DVD movie buying since the real solid HD (either format) products appeared on the radar.
Still buy TV DVD boxsets and I have picked up a few "cheap" DVD movie releases but for the most part I have no wish to go through the VHS-Laserdisc-DVD routine again:)

Cheap box sets only realy is the way for me at the mo.
Though I'm holding off on a few things like Lost/House as it's a racing certainty that they'll be available in HD (already available on the web i guess:rolleyes: ) to purchase within a year or so.
Add that to the fact that now I have a Panny Plasma, some DVD's just don't cut it.
I'm certainly buying less dvd's at the moment. I have found myself not buying films I would normally get and waiting to watch it on Sky HD. 'The 40 year old Virgin' for example on Sky tonight is a film I've almost bought on several ocassions. I'm not going to stop buying the films I really want to see as it may be over 12 months before I decide on a HD or BD player.

I would say thats more down to the limitations of your plasma set than the dvd format.
Plasma/LCD notoriously display SD material with poor pictures

I would say that it's due to the revealing nature of my Plasma showing up the limitations of DVD;)
Having said that. Watched The Core (DVD) this evening which had excellent quality and after that I switched onto Freeview and was stunned at the quality of CSI on Ch5.

I don't seem to have stopped buying DVDs :) I'll certainly buy again when I decide what HD format to go with in a year or so.
If you think CSI looks good on C5 (nice to have a decent bitrate on Freeview for a change), it looks crap compared to the hi-def CSI stuff I have!

I dont plan on buying into the HDDVD or BRay format for ages yet.
At least a few years away, until it settles down and I know what to back.
I have close on 400 titles, and in all honesty am pretty happy with DVD as a format at the moment. Sure some transfers look pretty poor on older discs when watched on the 42", but the quality of most recent releases are perfectly fine.
I dont tend to go for as many DVD's now as I did say a year ago (i.e. 3 for £20 at HMV etc), I tend to buy selected titles now (quality over quantity).
gone are the days where I would buy on impulse in a shop cause it 'looks like a good deal' or 'so I can bump up my collection'.
DVD format will be supported for a LONG time to come given that every Joe Bloggs owns a DVD player, and the same Joe bloggs will not buy into the new format for a long time until prices are alot cheaper or there are no alternatives. THe DVD market is vital to the production of films, given that more and more people stay away from the cinema and will buy DVD, or both.

Stopped buying dvd's as the new year turned. 90% because of the High Def media coming soon and 10% is the fact there has been nothing good out really worth getting IMO and i basically have all my fav films on dvd. Good thing as ive saved a bucket load of cash :)

I am alot more selective about the DVDs I buy now, especially when they are released at full price.
I am still buying DVDs. I haven't been to the cinema since King Kong last Christmas, and its cheaper to buy the R3 versions of new releases than to pay to see them in the cinema (for 2 or more people). I used to go to all the Summer films in the cinema, but this year I haven't seen any. Its too expensive (or at least more expensive than the alternative).
I am also getting a lot of older films and TV shows on DVD. These will take a long time to appear on whichever hi-def format wins out.
Overall, I don't see any reason to stop getting DVDs. They are as cheap as ever and the picture/sound (for the most part) looks great!!!

I'm still buying the odd films or two (mainly the kids stuff) and probably will buy a couple of main films over Crimbo but not going to be buying as I used to.
The only other exceptions are TV series really which probably won't be on hidef anytime soon and to be honest not sure how much some of them will be improved really.

I am aiming to buy all my movies on HD DVD and BluRay from now on - there will be a few exceptions: i.e. titles not likely to come out on the new formats for a considerable period and I might also consider getting a cheaper SD DVD as opposed to a expensive, poorly authored, single layer MPEG2 BluRay disc.
Obviously there are some titles on DVD though that will receive no benefit from high def (old TV shows) and I shall continue to buy these on DVD.
Certainly looking to the future though and the slow demise of DVD...

I agree that DVD is slowly going away, but the problem is: what will replace it? By the time DVD has gone completely, I think we will be downloading everything, which is putting me off the new hi-def disk formats.

I don't think so.
Why not?.
Judging from the fact you can still buy VHS then DVD will be with us for another ten years!, plus the takeup of HD is likely to be far slower than the transition from VHS to DVD due not only because the benefit of such an upgrade is far less, but also because this upgrade requires a whole new tele. Then there's the whole Blu-Ray/HD debacle which can only hinder the speed of high def take up.
So it's not unreasonable to suggest that by 2016 the online download market will be pretty substantial.
I don't think so.
I do
But seriously, DVD is well established and almost everyone has a DVD player. The new hi-def fomats are only starting off, with very little impact on the overall home video market at the moment. To get a decent foothold in the market, they have to overcome the format war and then uptake is dependent on people having a hi-def telly and willing to pay for a new player. I don't see many people in the mainstream doing this for a while. In the meantime, broadband is continuing to grow and downloading video (all be it, mostly in the US) has already begun.
I consider myself to be a moderate "home-theatre" type person and I won't be getting the hi-def formats for a long time yet. I just don't see it taking off.

I was just casting my mind back to the days when DVD was only a few months away, and I stopped buying Videos. In fact I seem to remember it being quite frustrating, because there were a few big releases that I was interested in buying, but I was determined not to buy them on VHS, and then ended up waiting quite a few months for the DVD release.
The other thing I was just thinking was that from my VHS collection I have only replaced a few Star Wars, Jaws, Jurassic Park and some of the Disney movies on DVD.
