Does anybody know if any of the online rental companies hire complete box sets as opposed to splitting up the set.

no none do, at least none that I've heard of and I can't see any chance of it happening really. I think the biggest rental package I've seen is 5 discs at a time and most full length (22/24 episode) series are on 6 discs+
While it looks like there is lots of online rental companies many of them are the same company, there is actually only a few. Even 2 of the 3 big ones Lovefilm and screenselect are now owned by the same people.
