Soundcards that support 7.1 sound...

If I have a soundcard that supports 7.1 sound, will a set of 5.1 speakers work fine (I can't afford any 7.1 ones that I want), or will I need to mess around with the soundcard settings first to make them work correctly?

The soundcard I'm using is a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music if that's any help.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers in advance!

Go into the settings and just tell it you have 5.1 (sometimes it's called 6 channel), it is really simple.
