Files staying Read Only

Can anybody help, i had to reinstall XP onto my laptop but now when i try and copy any of my jpegs or doc files from the old install into a new folder to burn to a DVD it says the folder is read only and dosen't allow me. i changed the properties option of the folder and removed read only, applied and said ok, went back to check the properties and again has went back to read only.

Take ownership of the files, and then try removing the read only attributes.
