Very annoying problem recently:

I have an 8mb Virgin broadband connection for my 360/Live. The wireless router also feeds an iMac (hardwired) and laptop (wifi). Strange thing is, my Live connection has been terrible all week and keeps dropping out, so does the iMac connection. Bizarrely, the Laptop wifi connection is pretty fast and internet download speeds are fine!

I've checked the DNS/Subnet/IP settings on all machines, and they're pretty much the same (the last digit on the IP addresses are different of course). I don't understand how the laptop can be working fine, but my 360 and the iMac be working so slow.

Very frustrating! Any ideas? (btw, the iMac has a 100mbit ethernet card). Nobody else seems to be taking bandwidth from my wifi router - although it is not password protected.

Cheers,
DT

the first thing I'd do is set up some security on your wireless LAN

Don't know how to chris, and I'm afraid of buggering something up in the process (which is easy, when the laptop in question has French-language XP installed on it...)

I only use it for Live so I'm not that bothered about the security side of things, TBH.

You should always be bothered about wireless security. Its not just a case of stopping people nicking your bandwidth, your also exposing your PC to others. Would you dangle a long ethernet cable out of your window and let passers by jump on your network and start to try to gain access to your PC/Laptop?

Yeah, I hear what you're saying, and you are right. I probably should get round to doing it sometime....

And bizarrely, Live seems to be working alright now - seems the DNS settings were a bit iffy after all...
